Hi!

I'm going to edit a project that will be about 20 minutes long. The footage is about 500-600 GB of space and I have made a safety copy for the original footage and it will be edited on a 1TB harddisk.

It was shot in 4k, 3k for slow motion shots and some shots in 2k.

I was thinking about converting all the footage to 2k with REDCINE I think the program is and then editing it in FinalCut. After that bring it to Colour do some colour correction and then back again to Finalcut. Finally I would online the footage and output to final media.

Would this be an acceptable workflow?

It's my first time with RED and I think I got it pretty figured out but still need some tips and pointers I think.

Thanks in advance

Adam

also there's no point in doing CC before onlining; the color space will be different between your offline footage and your online.

But how do I downconvert my footage? I can do that with redcine, right? And then do the offline edit. I've been told that color can't take footage that is over 2k in size so I guess I would have to CC in offline, take it back to FCP and then online the footage.

the new color release for fcs3 accesses the full 4k at full debayer quality; as well as output in 4k (according to the whitepaper) before you start you should know what your final delivery specs will be, 2k is perfectly acceptable for a film out.

You can use redcine, redrushes, redalert, clipfinder, finalcut log & transfer tool, any of those will let you import footage into workable data rates and file sizes; for full quality you'll want to reconform your final cut with the original red files once finished editing but before color correction, and send the raw data to color; your final output size and codec you pick from color.

I've just received my footage. Do I for example just use Redrushes to conform the proxy files to 1080p? The final output is 1080p so Isn't it best to downsize to that for offline edit, then online to full res for color correction.

But then after I've onlined it to full resolution and I want the final result to be 1080p how do I manage that without doing to many conforms and transcoding and so forth.

Thank you.

By the way. The footage is about 600 GB and I want it all to fit on a 1TB harddisk. So the conformed files shouldn't be more than 300GB

RR>1080p >edit> conform timeline with clipfinder_H proxies, maintain aspect ratio, frame size, frame rate etc>send to color, clips can be scaled & Pan-scanned at this point, since you shot 2:1 and are onlining 1.78:1 you'll have a lil extra framing on the horizontal that you can play with as well as do any reframing/pushins on the 4k file; your renders will be 1920x1080psf23.98, i can't promise that your conformed files thru RR will be less than 300gb; it all depends on what codecs you choose.
