  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sorry I have missed this but are we going to see a function where we can shoot Video at 25fps / 180 degree shutter (50th second) ISO 200 and shoot another track of "stills video" at 25fps / 200th second iso 800. Using the HDRx function.

I'm not an expert on how the HDRx mode works, but from my understanding, you dial it in depending how many stops of "protection" you want. So if your base is 1/50th of a second shutter, then two more stops would be 1/200th second. Can you not just dial in +2 and get the desired result? Forgive me if my understanding of HDRx is not accurate.

Thomas, I see what you're asking... that is effectively possible assuming you rate your exposure and monitor at a low ISO relative to your 'stills' source. Remember the ISO is just metadata. You shouldn't really shoot below 320 ISO, and 800 gives the best overall balance, but this would be an intelligent alternate use of the HDRx

Yeah, the important thing I want to vary is he shutter. I want one track to have a 180 degree shutter (video) and the other to have a 45 degree shutter (stills). I want both tracks to essentially have the same exposure histogram.

You'll have to adjust the ISO to 800 of the X-track in post and that should work fine. You'll probably have to use the highlight info in the x track as well to recover some of the potentially lost highlight in the A track from rating A at below native.
This kind of approach could be working really well for greenscreen shooting as well allowing the x track to be used for more accurate tracking due to it's lower shutter angle and resulting lower motion blur.

So it is possible to vary the shutter between the two tracks?

Off course the idea being to generate nice stills with less motion blur.

Agreed, it would be really helpful for motion tracking in general; not just on green screens. I'm not too sure if it would help with keying.

It's an interesting idea, but since the aperture would stay constant, I don't see how it could be possible other than through the manipulation of ISO, making one track much noisier or clippier than the other.

This working ok. There is absolute no point whatsoever to shoot at less than 320, even on the Epic. Then you could develop the X track at 1280 ISO and the A track at 320.

1280 is no beef as to noise on the Epic.

Unsure if I would like to work this way, though...
