Shooting On RED Starring Michael Douglas

BARD was rolling about a block away from me today. I got some BTS pics. All were taken on my point and shoot camera because I wasn't expecting them to be there- hence I wasnt prepared with a DSLR and/or my HDR...

Anyway, here they are:

Michael... since you are in town, could I treat you and/or Peter to lunch sometime?

RED LCD Too Small

RED LCD Too Small

Congrats Michael! This is really cool. Btw, I noticed you arent using any Red LCDs, did they not hold up or were they deemed too small or...?

Hello Shawn,
Nice to hear from you again, we do not use the RED LCD monitors because they are too small and also very hard to use for focus or framing.

We love the Panasonic 8.4" HD LCD monitors they have builtin waveforms and
HD zoom which really helps.

This is an exiting project Michael,
thanks for sharing the info and the addicting photos.

Hello Ketch,

Thanks for words of encouragement, I must say if it was not for Peter Hyams determination, this movie would have been shot on 35mm.

Peter really embraced this technology and did everything in his power to convince the Studio's and the Bond company to shoot on this format.

My partner John Lands really made this project happen from setting up all the edit bays to a 4K film scan, which the studio loved.

For now enjoy the photo's

Great stuff Radiant! Do you happen to know the model number of those Hoodmans you're using on the Panasonic 8.4"s?

The hoodman are LH900
They fit the best

Thanks Michael,

I love the behind the scenes. Tone of cables (don't love those too much) and gear in a mist of people, filmmaking, what a great art ours is.

As I prepare for ,my first project I'm too searching and looking in which way make this happen, and for me there are no questions, it has to be a full 4k RED production, just so much to learn before fully been able to present the visual production and post workflow final option to the table.

You will obviously need no help, but if you do please contact me.

BTW, Love the fact that they decided to go with my very Favorite lenses: the MP's, please do share.

Hello Kitch,
I am not so crazy about the cables either.
But in order to make all the accessories work on this camera such as:

CE Cine Tape (active measuring focus)
Preston FIZ Wireless Follow Focus System (wireless focus, zoom & iris)
8.4" HD LCD Monitor (HD Monitor w/waveform & HD Zoom)
AJA Downconverter (HD to SD downconverter)
Comtex (wireless reference audio recording)
Clockit Box (timecode jam sync)
Switronix GPTS (hot-swap battery power)

But I am sure someone will design something which will allow us to use only one cable for everything.

No I understand the need is just that I'm a bit perfectionist on about everything, ( a bit ANAL too).

Thanks for the more pics, I also see one of my favorites in use the Centipede from my friends at MSE.

BTW, any news on the MP's, few have reported them to have CA on the RED more then the UP or Cookes, any word?

Ciao

I can tell you we tested all the lenses you mentioned for this film.
Again this movie is going for a Theatrical release with a 4K film scan... So the lens choices was very important for us.

I love the Cooke's and the Ultra Primes. However we just loved the look and feel and the one stop difference made a huge impact on our decision.

After our intensive test and other DP recommendations:
Such as Darius Khondji & Roger Deakins.

We selected the Master Primes. They have higher contrast, deeper blacks and a great reduction of false light effects such as internal reflections, veiling glare, flare. we never experienced any chromatic aberration.

As for my little experience (yet) I have been in absolute favor of the MP as well, and till recent post about the CA issue, I was under the impression that this lenses, even so build for Film, they are the absolute best lenses for RED too.

Now it pleases me to ear that you guys are very happy as well, as I will be likely to purchase some MP for my RED's, unless off course RED pulls a Rabbit on us (which it seems the case with the 18-85 ) on their Primes, then price and quality been there, well I'm there with them, but for now as the Primes are not out, I will be likely to choose the MP, as I also have a Birger mount on order I'm so curious to see the Canon Still "L" lenses performing on the CMOS of RED, as I suspect a pleasant surprise awaits.

Thanks for the update. Seeing these cameras in action on a major movie set with no 35mm in sight must be a dream come true for Jim. The doubters have all but vanished by this point.

This was an extremely tough sell.

If it was not for Peter Hyams who pushed and pushed for this happen.
We would be shooting on a Panavision camera right now.

The Studio did not want to do.
The Bond company did not want to do it.
The Producers were not crazy about this new technology.
The Post production did not want to go for this as well.

We had to perform several test and prove to them, this was a solid reliable format to shoot on.

We did have some small problems here and their but everything went as is going well.
Which is amazing we are shooting on 6 RED camera's.

Performing stunts, crashing camera's into cars.

It's crazy.

Thanks for taking the time Radiant, I second Tom's comment on doubters have vanished. This in an incredible and complex stuff your putting the RED though and I hope it holds together to the end. Best of Luck.
