  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Shooting anamorphic with Epic

Have you seen any RED features shot on anamorphic? Like Total Recall or Elysium? These were shot on 2x anamorphics and none of the DP's were complaining about it.... Check out the music videos and commercials of Chris Probst who shoots with Epic and Kowa anamorphics... People have been shooting anamorphic on RED without issue, so rest assured, it's been done. Give it a try...

Those films did mix a bit of spherical in, mainly in the telephotos, but no one would notice. I don't think mixing is an issue until things like bokeh come into play (at least for practical purposes).

Matt your forgetting the films you mentioned are big budget films shot on the best anamorphic lens and huge range of focal lengths in the world. 25mm G series and 28mm E series. I'm dealing with 40mm cropped so its more like 50mm..

but yes, I'd still rather shoot a bit cropped Ana than sepherical .

That is amazing footage...what did you do to crop it? Is there a crop setting in red cine -x? My reason for asking is that I will never be able to afford ana lenses, so I would rather create or support your style of cropping great images every now and them. I have an EPIC now and I don't want to be limited on what I can do with this camera from not being properly educated from those that do great work using this camera.

When using anamorphic lenses there is no crop thats the image your getting its wider then taller. If you want to shoot cropped with normal lens you can shoot 5k WS or 5k 2:1 or just crop in post

But why would cropping the sides be an issue? It shouldn't be, as such. What shooting on a sensor like the 4:3 Alexa's will give you over a super35 sensor is a wider field of view. So by all means, let things like Field of View, Resolution and other aspects of a given camera's image quality be deciding factors on which camera you use - but please don't let cropping be one of them. You're not "loosing" anything. You're simply not using "useless" parts of the sensor.

The more interesting questions are, "Is my FOV wide enough when I'm shooting 5k ANA" or "Is the 2.8K resolution from the Alexa XT enough for my needs"

How come Alexa 4:3 yields more resolution than film?
from Arri website
Frameline ARRI 2.39 Scope 2x 2582 x 2160 (1.195:1) 21.30 x 17.82 mm / 0.840 x 0.702”, ø: 27.77 mm / 1.093”

Cinemascope on 35mm film is 21.95 x 18.6 mm / 0.864 x 0.732

I think that like Sony a while back, that claim might be arising on the basis of film-originated post-production being done in a 2K digital post-production environment. I called a Sony guy out on it at a Cine-Alta product presentation in Perth about year 4BR (before RED) and he coughed to the 2K thing.
