I'm booked doing 2nd DP on a feature shooting aerials in NYC in nov. So my question is that I'm using my Scarlet and lenses, what should I look out for when flying in a helicopter and RED. The last Aerials I did, we used the Cineflex with the Sony 1500 I believe, recorded to the cinedeck. Really did not like the quality of the footage of that camera. If anyone has some suggestions on helicopter rigs or companies to contact, or do's and don't with the RED in the air? Is there a cineflex that can hold a DSMC RED in NYC?

Thanks for reading.

Hi Jon. I don't believe that the cineflex has been designed to work with Red cams. Last I heard, their "Elite" system holds the Alexa.

We typically fly the Epic in the Eclipse gymbal with great results. The company is Pictorvision. http://www.pictorvision.com/
If you want to see the Epic mounted in the gymbal, I can send you pics. The Scarlet would be similar.

The Gyron is equiped to fly Epic, and you would probably have to rent their camera for the shoot.

There may or may not be Eclipse or Gyron available in NYC, they shoot there a lot, but even if they're there, you may have to pick up some shipping costs. Either of these solutions will probably cost more than cineflex.

Something to keep in mind: Helicopters may not fly closer than 1500 ft to the building tops over NYC. The only way to fly lower is over the rivers. (Other cities are not as restrictive.)

I shot NYC aerials this time last year and may have something that would work for you, especially if you are looking for skylines, establishments, bridge shots, etc. Here are some links to the footage:

The first 12 pages of this link is from last year's shoot.

There is more footage being produced from this shoot that is not yet posted, so if you don't see what you are looking for, I may have it.

Thank you Phil for your input. I thought since the elite can fit the alexa-m it could fit a DSMC? I will pass the info to the producer. I looked at your footage and a lot of the footage is what is planned on getting for the b-roll. Looks great. I love your dusk shots, you got the perfect clouds, and the buildings look amazing. I will also suggest contacting you if we miss any shots or the producer realizes how much it's gonna cost to fly properly.
