  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Now that Ted showed us a real working prototype with canon L series glass...

How will this translate to 3d ; will the camera be able to focus by the built in AF mode, to focus both systems at the same time on the same subject???

Will we be able to use 1 camera as master, due to the fact imho that it's better if the other slightly on a differet position, and certainly taking into calculation that it might be placed after a mirror who could be misinterpret by the focus measuring on the second camera behind the mirror, so that it would talk and pull focus on the other camera????

might be not the best explanation , but probably you know what I mean

I think that the idea is that both cameras are controlled by the same Redmote?

Of course, having one master camera controlled by Redmote and then hooking up the other camera(s) as slaves would work well too...

Not sure how you compensate for slight manufacturing differences between two lenses.

Personally I just hope that RED releases their own electronic lenses soon - and offers "matched stereo sets" for a little extra. Like matching microphones.

RE: the difference in focus between two cameras due to position... are you talking about a parallel rig, or one with electronic motorized convergence, or one with fixed convergence per shot?

If you are running a mirror rig, then you should still rig it so that the two cameras are the same distance, though? Eg if an object is in the center between them they form an isosceles triangle? Don't quite understand. Are you talking about focusing on an object when it's on the far right, say - and then the right camera is a little closer than the left?

Dear Bruce, I mean , when you would use the touchscreen to focus on an object, if the camera wouldn't be able to listen to the master one, and you would have to touch the others screen to get the same object in focus, the two might be not identical cause there will be some distance between them, no matter wich setup; beamsplitter or parallel... the object will find itself at another place on the optics... If the lenses don't breath to much , this would'nt be too much of a problem, but if they do , it would even be worse.

Hope you understand what I'm trying to explain.

ps matching stereo pairs , would indeed be a real nice idea.... when done properly off course; With mics, I've already have some pairs, they said were matched, but actually weren't and it was more a marketing issue.

I'd imagine what would happen (if they linked cameras) would be:

1. user touches focus point on camera A's monitor
2. camera A decides that focus point is at 3'6"
3. camera A sends a message to cameras B, C and D saying "focus on 3'6... NOW!"
4. cameras A, B, C, D all focus to 3'6" at the same time.

This could at least change the whole 3d game... Main factor is , when will the RED Electronic lenses be available before spending lots of money on another solution....in the meantime we could use canons....

You can't deny the fact it might not be chosen as an academic standard to shoot in 3d , but it could be a really nice stuff if budgets are not allowed to have enough lens motors and expensive lenses , when shooting multicams.

So please Red, could you try to get this feature implemented , if it already isn't... So the only thing that should happen is that camera B listens to the focus decision of camera A and not the distance it has measured on its own.

Birger has stereo software for controlling the canon lenses. I don't know if you could do a focus offset on the old impero controller, but they are making their own controller for their new mount for the AF100 and it is a software function so probably doable. Epic should be much more mount friendly, so third party mounts shouldn't be much of an issue.

Did Element Technica ever finish their RED1 Canon smart mount, that was alluded to by RED in the Birger thread a year or so ago?

ET seem to be the 3D kings and like it would be a natural for them to make this kind of stereo controller.

I wonder if many still lenses would be mechanically and optically precisely matched well enough for sophisticated 3D work?

From what I hear through the grapevine even highend cine primes have significant differences. With stills at least you could afford to buy a bunch to find some that are well matched. I'm told some pros buy several from B&h, choose the best and return the rest.

Agreed, This is what we do all the time. since DVXuser's First NYC meeting (2006) 'til now.
Huge advantage living next door to B and H (lol)
You're all welcome to my studio (42nd & 8th) for any test.
B and h has fantastic return policy.
