Anyone used the Shoot35 Mattebox with their Scarlet? Seems like a great option for the price with it's swing away feature.
My only concern is the filter tray size(4x4)...what is the widest lens one can use with this size?

I've got the Shoot35 Cinebox and I've been very happy with it. It could be a bit more rugged (plastic trays are less than ideal, for instance), but for the price its hard to find a comparable option. If you remove the matte from the front, you can get away with a 11mm lens at 4KHD. At regular 4K you can probably use a 14mm or so.

I've been using the Shoot35 matte box and follow focus since January. Been extremely happy with them both. My only complaint, as well, would be the filter trays being too flimsy, and sometimes a bit difficult to put back into place (just have to jiggle them a bit to get them to slide in)... but nothing that would prevent me from buying this again!

I've used the Tokina 11-16mm... you just have to remove the front magnetic matte and push the lens into the bellows as much as you can, then shooting 4K at 11mm works just fine.

Overall, it is solidly built, and you can't beat the price. My only recommendation would be to buy extra bellows adapter rings for all lenses you might possibly use. You don't have to use the adapter rings, but it assures blocking out stray light. Since they are coming from England (to USA in my case), getting extras later on would be a bit of a hassle...

Thanks for the reply Greg.Seems like the plastic filter trays are the only complaint but I was more concerned about wide lenses so after your post I'll probably fire ahead with the purchase.

Cheers guys...

You have two issues

1. Shoot35 won't work with many wide lenses.
2. The dragon will exacerbate this.

Look at O-Box, which I believe is the widest, sturdiest option available.

In the end, if it won't work with your lenses (and your lens requirements may change, everything else does), then it's not inexpensive, it's an expensive doorstop.

Les,
if I'm not mistaken, the dragon upgrade does not change the size of the sensor, rather it increases the pixel density to eek out more resolution. Thus the upgrade will actually affect us in the opposite manner, giving us more resolution at the coverage limits of our current lenses. Also, the shoot35 certainly wont work with some wider-diameter cine lenses, but then again, if you can afford those you're likely in a different market for an MB. It has worked great for me with every focal length down to 11mm and diameter up to 82mm (haven't tested any larger).

For the price it's a great box. I bet the Obox is stellar, but the added price might not be necessary for some people.

The sensor is slightly larger in the Dragon http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?77169-Dragon

But, if you shoot 4K with Dragon, then the size will be smaller. But, that kind of defeats the purpose and might not result in improved quality as the pixels will be smaller (possibly more noise?).

There's another discussion on MB's here that might be useful http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...e-and-efficient-clip-on-matte-box-for-scarlet

The bottom line is that many are happy with Shoot35. If you'll always shoot 4K, maybe that will work. I don't think my perception was that it would work with 11mm lenses on the Scarlet, but ... if you've used them, then great.

Probably depends on the lens.

Shoot35 was on my list recently, but I decided to future-proof as best I could by throwing a little bit more money at it - as better to have wide and not need it, than to need wide and not have it.

I looked at my notes when I was trying to figure between an O-Box and Shoot35.

Shoot35 - Widest Lens : 24mm @ 36x24mm sensor size
O-Box WM - 18mm widest with a Full frame is 36×24 mm sensor

The Shoot 35 box will accommodate Tokina 11- 16 @ 4k. At 11mm you can push the camera into the bellows to clear cropping.

However 5k is another matter & that is what I assume dragon will be shooting ....... then you will have crop issues.

Currently the Shoot 35 is a great MB for the dollars apart from the plastic filter trays, I own one. Next year with a larger sensor could be another issue all together thats why I'm considering O Box if I go the upgrade.

i know this is an unpopular viewpoint...but I love my Redrock Micro Mattebox...there are a few things I would change..but not many.
