SHARPEST LENS EVER! 100mm CANON MACRO L

Speaking of the IS, I recently used it on a car to car shot, and the Hybrid IS is amazing. The road was pretty smooth but no way it was that smooth. As the lens is wicked sharp.

Note that the above build has been tested and released as a release build. There will be a camera Beta 3.X build posted later this week that supports some new AF code, lens additions etc..
The AF is even going to get better very soon...

I've been using the old 100mm 2.8 macro non L and the breathing makes the lens unusable, hows the breathing for the L version?

I use the Zeiss 100/2.0 Makro Planar. Definitely razor sharp and with that distinct Zeiss micro-contrast look. It is an open question as to whether the 100mm Canon L macro is the "sharpest lens ever". Sort of like, "... how many angels can dance on the head of a pin ..." Here is an interesting discussion comparing the 2 lenses from our still photography friends: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/910856/0

I would say that the biggest advantage the Canon has over the Zeiss is AF and image stabillization. Those features alone would probably make it a better choice for Epic/Scarlet users who are inerested in those features . However, I am already heavily invested in old-fashion MF lenses without IS, so I guess I will never know what I am missing.

I'm going to start with saying that Im a PL GLASS man.... Have been for 20 years... Probably will be for many years to come...
But I've been shocked over the last 4 months of testing lenses...

Now I've owned some seriously sharp lenses in my day... but man!!!!! the 100mm CANON MACRO L is now the king of kings. Not sure if I have fluked one... or they are all this good, but I am amazed with the one in sitting on my camera right now.

Now some of these blowups are way past what they should be, some are up to 800-1600%... Something none of us will ever need to do... But I wanted to see the extreme point.

Having AF control while recording and image stabiliser which actually works is like a gift from god... Pulls sharps perfectly, from 3 inche to infinity in seconds... from pin to pin.
There is know way in hell a human can pull focus better this without pre focussed marks and a shit load of practise. You just point this at something and bang its spot on, from an ant to a mountain... without even taking your hands off the camera.

I shit you not... SELL your MACRO PL glass lenses now before its too late. I'll never use mine again.... PL Macro glass is officially died for me today.

Been using the Canon 100mm 2.8L Macro lens on the 1Ds III since it first came out, really is a very SHARP lens, used also for Portrait, it does make the eyes POP, but I sure need to do some serious Skin Photoshopping... ;)

It is also way better then the 180mm, different Bokeh of course considering the focal, but do love this lens, and it is nor for nothing that it is also used on the Deep Epic, and Gates makes an extension port for this particular lens.

Anyone know if this lens vignettes on 5K on the Scarlet? and wonder what about the lens would cause Ketch to think he has to photoshop skin tone?

Need a new lens, not for macro as much as portrait. This might be my winner. New to Scarlet, so this would be #2 to my Tokina 11-16. After this any recc on what the next lens for my Scarlet lens inventory?

I also noticed that B&H is sold out of the US version but not the import version; any idea why? Is the import better because its probably made in japan instead of here?

thanks for your comments.

Personally, If I were doing strictly portraits, I'd only use the 85mm 1.2 or the 70-200 2.8...
The 100mm Macro just that... a 100mm... Its best kept for close up work.

Ketch is talking about photosop work possibal touch ups of skins etc, it is very sharp.
The 100 MACRO will cover a 7k chip.

Kevin,

when I photograph girls faces I need the eyes to absolutely be as sharp as possible to cary the maximum detail possible, however to do this you ned to use the sharpest lenses, and when you have this, you will inevitably also capture the detail of the skin in their faces, and this is the one that I need to work on in Photoshop, unless I use a softening filter, which I used to, but no longer since I learned photoshop.

Thanks for continually giving feedback on the Canon stuff. The IS of this lens is the key. I almost bought the 135f2 (one of my fav still lenses) in its place. IS is the deciding factor no doubt.

Probably the best IS L lens available. Definitely my sharpest lens(until I can afford the new 24-70L or some Zeiss glass)
