Hello you all..
I have just received an invitation to the RED day bootcamp.
For me its kind of far to go there, 2 planes, 12 hour trip for just one day. But I am still considering the chance to go and spend a nice whole day with the pros. For all of you who have been there, could you care to share your experience during the bootcamp? I would like to know if its totally worth the trip or not, in your opinion of course. Is it really worth it? Did it solve your doubts? All of you who are in the same position as me, have you made you effort and spend the trip to LA to seize the red day? Looking forward to your responses, I have to answer that mail before tuesday! Thanks!

has RED just given up trying to enforce the first rule of RED DAY? lol

I'll send you a PM. :)

No kidding. I know Red doesn't believe in censorship, (just sensorship), but rules are rules...
I think they should delete this thread.

I have no clue of what are you talking about, what rules?
What did I do wrong?
I love the fact of the RED DAY, I am really considering of going even though I think its a huge cost and all. I just thought someone could elaborate a bit more of what that day is all about. Can someone explain?

Yes, what are rules are you talking about?

The only thing I saw in the email was Red asking that we don't disclose the DATE of the RED DAYs.

I don't think it suggested denying the existence of Red Days :-)

And just like Esteban, I would also have to travel a LONG way to get there, so would also like to know if it is worth the effort.

You are correct, we just ask that you don't disclose dates and times. We have only so many seats and people showing up without a specific invite for that session would have to be turned away. Of course, if you want to just drop by, the RED Store is open Mon-Fri 9am-5pm PT :)

well, cool, if I'm not breaking any rules then let me share my thoughts...

I went to a RED day last month. I don't live close to RED, about 6 hours away, but make the trek to LA fairly often so I didn't have to think twice about going. While I didn't regret the trip at all, I have to admit I was a little bit disappointed.

There were 3 main events. First there was an introduction, some explanation about RED philosophy and why we were there, followed by a 4K screening of the IBC demo (very cool). That all took about 30 minutes I'd suspect.

Next, the real meat of the day, Michael Cionni's RED Workflow demo. This I think took around 2 hours and discussed through a powerpoint presentation things like RED Alert, RED Cine, RED Rushes, SCRATCH, common workflows for TV, Indie, and Theatrical distribution, and archival.

Michael's a great speaker and knows his stuff, but for me personally, I didn't find this presentation very helpful. You'd get the most out of this if you've never shot with your camera, never opened RA/RC, and never visited this site before. For example, Michael has powerpoint pages for RA, RC, and RR, and talks about what they are, but he wasn't able to open up the apps and actually demonstrate their use and give instruction on the proper way to work with them and operational tricks. I can't speak for anyone else there, but I already knew what RED Alert was. I can also say that I watched Michael give demos at NAB this year on RED Alert, L&T, and Scratch, and found it MUCH more interesting. It felt like the demo would have been better suited to people considering purchasing a camera, but not sure about the work flow, and Michael could tell them, "see, the workflow works. Look we have these programs and they do this and that. Here are some flow charts for TV and theatrical, and don't worry about archival, here are the 3 most popular tape formats."

After that we took a "break" and there were RED staff available to answer questions, you could play with 2 RED ONES set up shooting a motorcycle, or step out side to stretch. After our 30 minute break, we all took our seats and watched the IBC demo again (very cool a second time), but then that was it, staff said thanks and good bye. You could hang around longer if you wanted, chatting with the staff, but that was all that was planned.

So again, I don't regret driving down at all, it was fun getting to see the IBC demo in 4K (twice), all the staff are great and friendly (they don't scoff at "stupid questions") and while I didn't really get anything out of Michael's presentation, he did go off on mini rants, usually not relating to RED directly, where I got to pick up some interesting tidbits of industry news.

However, there was a guy from England I think, and a guy from Lebanon. I'm assuming they had many other things planned during their LA trip, but if not I would have been piiiiissed (I of course wouldn't have done that though).

In summery, RED DAY was fun, and worth the drive, but you can learn about everything discussed, and in more depth, by spending a few hours here on REDuser.

Does Jim show up to these anymore? The IBC footage would be great (never seen anything in 4K) but I'm debating whether it's worth a flight from Seattle.

Unfortunately Jim wasn,t at the one I was at. And alot of what Brandon says was true (learning Red Apps), but I still had a great time talking with Jarred, Big John, Brent and many others. You could ask Jarred a question and (mostly) get an immediate response.

It was like Reduser LIVE!!!

Jim wasn't at mine either, but there were probably 12 other staffers there to answer all your RED related questions.

If it's within driving distance, I think it's a worthy excursion, but if it requires a flight I'd think twice, or at least plan a weekend around it and make as many other appointments in the area as possible.

I flew from Denver with several items on my "To Do" list, so it wasn't a Red-only trip. I was a bit disappointed in the amount of time spent and information proffered, but the quality of information at my Red Day was first class. While the greatest portion of time was spend on workflow (taught by Kevin Stanley), that was what I needed to understand most. My only regret was that I couldn't write fast enough to keep up with him.

What made the trip worthwhile to me was seeing footage in full 4K projection. I'd been wondering about what I was getting when rendering footage on my Mac, but seeing the real image in glorious 4K - plus picking up tips on Red Alert settings - put my mind at ease.

Would it be possible for Red to make a video of his presentation and put it online?

That would be very useful, and save me the trip :-)
