  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Shane Hurlbut on glass.... opinions?

Isn't that the key message Sanjin has had all along? The Leica's seem to be a religious experience (for some).

Well, it sounds like's trying to "take the edge off HD"... meaning he wants to soften the image to avoid aliasing? Such matters do not apply to Epic.

Master Prime is dogshit? Lolz.

I LOL'd at this post on Twitter by Matt Dulos a couple minutes ago:

I took Shane's advice. If anyone wants a slew of top shelf Zeiss optics, check the dumpster outside Duclos Lenses.

I reserved a set of the new Leicas about a month ago, cant wait to shoot on them :-)
....early next year :-(

Wondering if Shulbert actually refer to the Van Diems rebarrels or the new ones?

Until you don't try with Leica's you don't believe it...so that's very simple...

Seems to be Panavision has got it decades ago...

...I'm hopping on a plane to LA right now. My first stop will be the dumpster behind Duclos Lenses.

Seriously though, I would've loved to be a fly on the wall for the entire exchange between Shane and the other guy(s) he was talking to. Something tells me there's more to that conversation than the video is showing.

Master Primes are shit? Hmmm... Yeah, they are if you're shooting video with a 7D or 5DII. "take the edge of HD"... Yep, once again, I want to take the edge off any over-zealous aliasing or in-camera processing. Thankfully I don't have to shoot any cameras that do that anymore. That said, I personally have grown to dislike the Master Primes, having shot with them several times over the past couple years. Too flat, too sterile, not the greatest contrast out there, lot of money to pay to buy/rent a T1.2 lens set. I understand a lot of people covet them because they're a status symbol of sorts and they're nice and fast. If I had that sort of money to spend on glass, I would order the Leicas, no question about it. My second choice would be the Cooke S5's -- brilliant set of lenses. Not that I would throw the Master Primes under a bus, or say that they're not good lenses. They may not be my cup of tea, but they're still damn nice lenses.

EDIT> Looks like the video has been removed.

couldnt see what he said because it was deleted.. but I might be in agreement with him..

I personally dont like ultra sharp images on a ultra sharp medium.

hence Why i prefer older glass (standards, cooke s2/s3, kowa, super baltar)

it gives the image a much more creamy look

Too late. I bet Drew Walker is already down there dumpster diving Duclos' bins.

Yeah I just posted that on twitter, that I was on my way down there. Pays to live close. Hopefully Matt will have a prototype of that Nikon 70-200mm that they are rehousing in said dumpster.

That's exactly the term Shane often uses on his website..he talks about "Canon's creamy skin tones".

His favorites seem to be Panavision Primos but
there's some kind of legal conflict in useing those..next he seems to
like Canon L-series primes and Leicas.

I get Shane's point but I feel it comes from the same school of thought that championed the hvx over other cameras for having less resolution and thereby a softer "more filmic" image...

I don't think I could have put it any more eloquently as Richard did.
Opinions are like noses, everyone has one and they all have a couple of holes in them.
