What is the best light to create shafts of light. I am looking to create a strong beam of light using smoke for atmosphere.

Thanks

It's a warehouse. Interior. Average sized warehouse.

Fresnel or other focusable lights, spot lights, etc.

For me....

The cheap way is a large mirror(s) pushing the real sun through your environment .. but how do you know there wont be cloud cover that day.

Next are 20k ZEON BRIGHT LUGHTS... Very sharp beams from these.. but havent seen a set in many rental houses for a long time.

My old favorites I tend to use all the time now for such shots is the 12k Arrimax.

Cheap mirrors, yes. 20k of light? 12k???? Crazy! Maybe not the "best" but some 2K tungsten fresnels with smoke can create some beautiful shafts....but like Bob said, it depends on your environment.

How narrow a shaft of light do you need? If a fresnel isn't cutting it on its own, try putting a snoot on it.

follow spot will do what you need, doesn't have to be Altman, Chauvet does fine. they have both LED and halogen

Yeah, and many Xenons can also be fitted with mirror attachments as they don't love to be pointed straight down. Recently rented one from Acey Decy here in L.A. and they worked with me on what size I wanted, etc.

A lot depends on your location and if you can back light the haze or smoke in front of a darker back ground. Sounds like it will be possible with the warehouse setting.
Big lamps will give you a lot but you can accomplish shafts of light with smaller lights also in the right conditions.
