I'm brand new to Premier and checking out Premier CS5. Is there a post or link about the setup for a Mac? I'm not on Snow Leopard but it seems like I should be (currently running OSX 10.5.8). Is this correct?
On my first attempt I got lots of stuttery and inconsistent playback of R3D's, and even some SD footage I successfully captured.
Also, any chance of editing Red footage and getting the video out of a Kona LHe card?
Current hardware:
8 core 2.26GHz
12 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 120
4 TB RAID (apple software striped)
KONA LHe running latest drivers for Mac
Thanks!

– Get a better card, like the GTX 285
– Get a serious RAID
– 10.5.8 should be fine
– Get more RAM, at least 2 GB per core

Works very well here.

CS5 is always 64 bit, but a program can run in 64 bit under Leopard.

David,

I did a review on CS5 and discuss RED in the article as well.

Part of your issue may be the sequence size. I had better performance results when I stayed in a native 4K timeline. When you work with the native RED footage and place it into a 1920x1080 timeline, the graphics card (for the computer display) goes through two scaling calculations. One for the timeline scale and a second for the screen display resolution. Staying 4K eliminates one of those. Also take a look at your playback resolutions. "Full" will really challenge your machine. Throttle it down to half or lower.

I didn't test with a hardware I/O card.

1. Drag one of your clips into the "new item" icon at the bottom of the project panel. It will automatically configure the sequence to match your footage, much like FCP 6&7 does with it's "match sequence settings to clip?" dialog.
2. in the source and program monitor, click on the icon on the top right, a drop down menu will appear. Set your playback and paused resolution to something low, like 1/8 or a 1/4.
