  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

the challenge... to observe one of our robotics projects 24 hours a day... 7 days a week... from multiple angles...

we will record the video signal (hd or better) and sync it with the data in real time... they'll write the code that records the video feed when we need to... the camera network needs to supply a constant stream of video... i'm thinking SDI/USB/firewire?

the programmers will deal with the storage issues... and writing the compression code... etc... it's my job to get them the video feeds...

there are security systems that could do this.. but.. apparently you can't edit that footage easily (so it can be used in a court of law)... if at all...

so... the challenge i'm faced with.. building a cost effective system that will allow us to record any activity of the robot.... and also allow us to edit the footage later...

is there such a system?...

we need to have at least 4 cameras on the robot... if not more...

you guys have answered every stupid question i've ever asked... this is the most important stupid question i've presented you with... by far... any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think it's possible to record 24 hours on a Red camera without stopping -- it'll overheat and shut down long before that happens, unless it's very cold in the room. My advice would be to get a high-end HD broadcast camera instead, since those are actually designed to run for dozens of hours without ever shutting down. The Sony HD studio cameras CNN and ESPN uses (as two examples) go 24/7 for months and months and months on end.

well... it wouldn't necessarily be recording... we'd be using red ones (or another model camera) to be sending a signal via sdi/usb/firewire to a recording setup of the programers design... it's just my job to figure out what cameras would work to fit the bill... they just want a constant feed... they will couple the data and only keep the footage they need..

i just reread my original statement.. and have corrected it.. we don't need to record 24 hours a day... we just need a camera network sending a video feed 24 hours a day... we'll record what we need to when we're running the robot..
