Serious Questions about a "new deal"

hi jim, i wont be able to buy it, but do it! its
better for all.
reasons:
possible firmwareupgrades till the release,
the shit wil be beaten out of the epic out there, the feedback will be good for all.
these "betatesters" will have an opurtunity to earn bAck their money.
hopefully earlier integration of red tools to postproduction software!
the worldwide epic support gets to work with a limited group first and will be tested too
probably at 45k you still lose money (i guess), bit if the feedback is good for red and good for us.
do it.

Jim, just so I can understand. This new handmade Epic X would cost around 45K? Would we have to execute our Stage 2 to get it? And there is no trade-in value? What would be the approximate "premium" or net additional cost to a Stage 2 Epic X reservation holder to get one of these?

I need to beg my producer Nigel to do this, so I need some rough numbers.

Do you think these handmade Epics will have extra value in the future? Maybe you could make the body out of something special - carbon fiber, some special metal, etc, so they will really, truly be collectors items?

What he said.

1. We have bent over backwards for our customers. We aren't stopping that now.

2. I have said all along EPIC is a difficult trick. Do you see any other companies with such aggressive specs in a matchbox?

3. We have added features (like HDRx™) along the way that no one signed up for... no charge on EPIC.

4. You can have your deposit back any time we let you down, you find a better solution... or you are just pissed off.

5. If we do NOT do this new program (of a handful of cameras) you will not get your camera any quicker. Might even be a week later since we won't have the assembly data.

6. We expect assembly of production cameras to begin in modest amounts by early February and full ramp up by early April... before NAB.

BTW... if we DO do this program, a handful would be shipped in Dec. and more in January.

Hope that helps... now go eat something and calm down. Happy Thanksgiving. :-)

Jim

This is EXACTLY what I needed to know.

Thanks Jim! Thanks for listening to me!

It makes perfect sense to get EPIC's out the door and into production environments - sooner rather than later. The "competition" is out there capturing images - and showing them off. Isn't it in our best interests to let the world see EPIC images side by side with the others? The teasers we have seen on this site just begs for the earliest release opportunity.

I'm still unclear if someone choosing to get a hand built advance EPIC would lose their stage 2 option, but if not - just consider that the cost of the two brains (45K + 19.5K) is approximately one Alexa. Hmmm, releasing some EPIC's in advance of full production assembly would certainly make some potential A**a customers reconsider their purchasing plans. It will certainly make the industry stop in it's tracks - EPIC will be an undisputed reality.

Is it worth buying in early? Only if you have the projects to justify it.
For the rest of us, if Jim holds true to his word that our units would not be delayed by this manufacturing plan, what would we actually lose?
I'm buying in to the thinking that Jim stated - every bit of experience they get building the first units will translate into a more efficient manufacturing process.

Yeah, I'd like to suggest that Jim's "Schedule post" be moved to RECON.. There are a lot of people who will want to read this, and they'd expect it to be in RECON.

Any MODs out there want to take that on?

Trying to help

If someone buys a hand-built machined EPIC they will not lose whatever other Stage option they have. It will be a completely separate deal.

That is very good to know.... thanks. what about Tom's question about carbon fiber or something different for these hand built cams? I'd assume that would probably not happen as it would add a bit more dev time to get it right with a new material?

There are too many things going on around here to complicate EPIC with a carbon fiber body right now. Trust me when I say EPIC doesn't need help to be cool.

Jim

We go into full production on a major documentary in January; contracts, insurance, and financing 100% a go...in pre-production as we speak.

I'm more than happy to plunk down for a hand-built EPIC and put it to the test as I'd still have my MX traveling with us as a backup body.

Jim, we need to contact RED then about these hand built epics or ask go to the bat phone and ring you later?

In particular a higher priced/no trade in/jump the line version just reeks of unfairness.
I don't see this as unfair or "jumping the line". Anything can change for the better. This seems to be a new line outside the previous deals, and wont hold up the previous deals at all. I assume anyone could take part in this new additional production and not jeopardize their Phase two status. It seems to be a new additional deal.
