  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Serious Anton Bauer Issue

Also, in regards to a HyTRON 140 (or HyTRON 100), there ARE NO problems in starting up a high speed camera (435) or in pulling high currents from these batteries. We used "D" cells in these batteries and they are more than able to handle high spikes in current, unlike ANY lithium ion batteries or our HyTRON 50 (which uses a 4/3A cell).

Thanks.
Paul

Paul,
I have had multiple issues with my HyTRON 140 batteries not starting the Red. If I put the Red battery on the camera the Red starts 100% of the time, if I use a HyTRON 140 w/o a full charge, 50% of the time it will not start the camera.

I have been using your batteries exclusively for 20 years. I only own Anton Bauer batteries (w/ the exception of the 2 Red batteries I now have). I currently have 20 of your batteries and 4 chargers. I am not bashing your product, I am simply stating the facts as I experience them.

Your batteries have issues starting the Red that are not experienced with the Red branded batteries. Whether this is a Red issue or a AB issue I cannot tell...it is just an issue!

I edited my original post now that I've cooled down a bit...

So, do I have a faulty power board in my camera? I have to repeat, for all those of you who keep saying things like "my Hytron 140's have always worked," mine were working fine - except for these 2 occasions. I happened not to be in a production environment, but it would be embarrassing to have the camera just not turn on if I were. It could happen to you.

And to those who talk about half capacity, etc. - these batteries are brand new and as full as they can be - and an Anton Bauer representative watched me attempt to boot up my camera and certified that the battery was functioning normally.

Any ideas?

Are you using the AB to V-mount adapter?

I found it to be a rather loose connection; I've not had a failure to boot since replacing the Red V-mount with the AB plate (which we modified extensively).

Good shooting and best regards,

Have you contacted Red? I would suggest sending it to Red asap to eval.

Paul,
Thank you for addressing everyone's concerns regarding cable length and right angle connector so quickly. I for one really appreciate it.
I have two QR-REDs still in the bubble wrap. Is it best to return them for the mod to Abel, or directly to you guys?
I would have emailed you off forum but I don't have your address. I send a note of to Mitch at Abel this morning as well.
Also, I'm guessing that the missing pins means that we were not able to make communication work. That's a shame but I understand. Maybe we'll have a better shot at it with Epic? ;)
Cheers,
Harry

Please contact Anton Bauer directly.

2) The two additional pins are NOT needed in this situation since there is no communication with 3rd Party batteries and RED cameras. If they did communicate, then the pins would be needed to relay that information.

AB is obviously using the crimp-style Lemo's with removable pins. I for one would rather have missing pins than unconnected pins that could potentially fry something if they got bent, shorted or otherwise messed up. AB did exactly the right thing leaving these potentially lethal pins out of the connector. 12 volts/lotsa amps across a serial data line would not be pretty.

I FedExed my 2 QR-REDs to A/B today. The guy on the phone knew all about the fix and was very helpful and friendly.
So it seems like they are stepping up to the plate here.
I'll report back when I get the modified plates back.
Cheers,
Harry

I spoke to them today, and they were very friendly and helpful.

No one has actually confirmed for me what the missing Lemo pins are, but at this point I'm assuming I was mistaken in thinking they did something that could damage the camera, and thus apologize for what may have come across as hostility... just wanna protect my baby...

There is a Red One manual with connector pinouts. You can see what every pin does.

OR, you could read the 6th post in this very thread. Someone with a red-lettered username responded - that's usually quite official.

CrewPix, let's play nice.

I know what all the pins are based on pg. 60 of the manual as I've posted in this thread. I posted an image of my Lemo connector to confirm with Stuart that the pins he is talking about are indeed the pins I'm missing - which seemed appropriate as he indicated that there could easily be confusion. I have yet to hear from anyone any actual confirmation of what the missing pins in the image I posted are. I presume they're 1 and 6, but also feel I must be mistaken because pin 1 should not be missing.

That's it. No one has addressed the content of the image I posted.

You should have seen my original reply :-)

Your photo definitely shows pins 5 and 6 missing. The data pins. The diagram in the Ops guide shows the view looking into the camera power connector (female). The plug that goes into it (male) would of course be a mirror image of that diagram.

Just got my 2 QR-REDs back from A/B today. VERY fast turnaround, accompanied by a nice phone call from the service guy to let me know they were coming.
I can see what others were complaining about with the hot glue. But I think it will be fine. I actually squirted a little more in there. Looked like the boys at A/B went a little light on mine.
I'll install them tomorrow and report back... shooting now.
Cheers,
Harry

No trouble with those A/B QR-REDs. Very nice.
Anyone wanna buy a couple of V-Mount Red battery plates? ;)
Cheers,
Harry
