Where is the serial number on the RED body? If it is gone through use, is there a software method for verifying it? What other locations may it be found (and where, if on receipt, etc.)?

Also, what are some other techniques to ensure that a used RED potential purchase is not stolen?

Thanks for your assistance.

Thanks. In some other threads, I've read that they can become worn away, was that only with older cameras, or am I misinformed? If it is/was an issue, is there an alternate method to confirm?

I am meeting with someone to potentially buy one today, my previous experience with the camera is limited to a couple of shoots, and there are details about the sale that are worrisome. Is there anywhere online with a comprehensive compendium of reported stolen serial numbers?

The serial number is printed on metal label thats attached to the bottom of the camera, so if the label comes off there is no serial.

You can see the internal camera PIN during bootup, it might be possible to get the serial from red if you have the PIN.

If the serial number is not present, then I would assume that the camera is stolen.

The camera has the serial number on the bottom, but usually there is a baseplate of some sort in normal use which prevents most normal wear and tear on the camera base. You don't add and remove that often, so usually things look good in that area.

When buying a RED camera you should have it sent to RED as part of the transfer of ownership. There is a fee of some sort- for some reason $350 comes to mind, but someone will correct me I'm sure.

RED does some routine maintenance on the camera, as well as verifying its operation and provenance. They also update all their customer records to indicate the new owner, and provide you with a password for firware downloads etc. I think you also get a new warranty for a short period, 30 or 60 days- but I'm not clear on that.

Its a good service for buyers and sellers, and helps make sure everyone knows what is being traded.

The serial number on the camera is clear but where is the SN on the viewfinder and Red Drives. I have a carnet I need to fill out I do not know where they are?

Viewfinder SN is under the rubber grip for the diopter - except on very old models.

RED DRIVE serial is on the back where the ports are - except on very old models.

Serial Number(s) etc

Serial Number(s) etc

With regard to reported stolen goods list, yes we maintain one of those. So may be a good idea to check with us if you have doubts.

A key component of that is the camera's 9 digit PIN - Product Identification Number - which is a non-alterable electronic serial number.

You can see the PIN on the LCD / EVF at boot up, also you can force the rear of camera display to show it if you press UNDO and press the JOYSTICK.
