It all starts with the sensor…

How is it that RED could enter the cinema camera market 7 years ago and now about 50% of the released features are "Shot on RED"?

How is it that Canon owned the professional stills market 3 years ago and now Nikon is handing them their @ss?

How did Arri convert all the old-school film guys to the Alexa?

Sensors, baby. Sensors.

Apparently Canon is married to old sensor fab technology. The Nikon D800 scores 95 on the DXO sensor scale. The brand new Canon 5D MKIII… 82. Really? That can't be good.

Arri has a great sensor program… although a bit down on resolution from our point of view. :-)

Enter the RED Dragon. This is sensor technology that makes all the big guys want to put on their helmets.

So how did Canon get so lost? Who are the camera companies that recognize that sensors are 90+% of a digital camera? Who is investing in sensor technology?

In order...

RED
Arri
Sony
the rest…

Of course there are other factors that matter in this highly competitive and fast changing market. Who will upgrade the sensor in your existing camera instead of making you buy a new camera?

No matter what your answers are to these questions… it is all coming down to who has the best sensor program. Sensors matter. Side note... film is officially dead.

Looking forward to more exciting times!

One of the biggest worries of digital cinematography is still preservation and archives. There is currently no reliable and safe support to backup our beloved masters and rushes. With LTO or others you are condamned to copy everything on the next support every 5 years.

Jim, you have found your next fight !

Well you can archive on film, why not? Fuji won a technical Oscar for it, didn't they?

If RED Dragon delivers +7 stops above 18% grey and +8 stops below 18% grey card everybody will be blown away.

Jim, where ya been dude! It's been dead for a while! There's this company called Red Digital Cinema that started torturing film about 7 years ago... it's just curled up in a ball, laying there, struggling to survive, waiting for it's last breath to escape, my man!

Till the day you won't find any film manufacturer and lab, which won't be long... When you shoot digital, it's not to go back to film in the end ;-)

4TB hard drives are now $200. That means there will be 8TB hard drives for under $200 in a year or so. Compare making 3 hard drive backups and then doing it again in 5 years to a climate controlled environment for film.

These are the days when technology is your friend.

I remember the days of 4GB hard drives costing me about $6-8K for AVID systems! (Circa 94-96?) This is a BARGAIN in any age!

I usually agree with most everything you say but the one distinct advantage film has as an archival medium is that it requires no device to last 30 years and work to play it. You can hold it up to any light source and see the image.

How do we know we can even turn on a hard drive in 100 years? END interjection.

EDIT: I am going to assume you mean FILM SPECS are dead :)

I really never even thought of a SENSOR before Red ... it was always 3CCD chips :)

Cheers to a sensor that beats film in all aspects. That would be awesome. Nobody is there yet, so if RED does it, it will be huge. Can't wait to test it ze Dragon in 2013!

BTW I don't know about everyone else but I haven't lost much data ever since I started doing multiple backups in multiple physical locations, since, oh, 1998 or so. I guess there is a place for a film print as archival medium if you don't have control over how your data is backed up (eg it's in the hands of nincompoops)... but if the data is in your own control it's pretty trivial to keep it safe.

But yeah... back to acquisition. Yay! Exciting times.

Every major feature this days have usually several master copies printed on 35mm or 72mm conventional film (apart from thousands copies for theatrical releases as well) regardless of type of the camera being used for the filming process. Not bad idea, I think :) Why not? But f
uture is coming - apart form traditional flash-memory lots of other methods will be on market in 3-5 years. 5-7 Years from now - Multi petabytes (x1000TB) SSD with almost infinite lifespan will be reality.

The images I've seen out of my MX sensor are leagues ahead of anything else I've ever shot (never shot film) and I can't wait to see the images from Dragon.

3 CCD baby! hehe

I agree that a LONG TERM reliable solution is still needed.......
