  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

It is explained here: (founded on this forum)

someone knows?

2k scaled was dropped before the camera even shipped I thought. No benefit at all. it actually requires MORE processing power to get 2K scaled than 4K, and when you shoot 4K you immediately get half res proxy.

Well, maybe it would have interested some people to have less stockage needed (Go/2) and to keep a 35mm depth of view...
am I wrong?

I agree with you that you can use 2K proxy but, you still have a bigger R3D than with Scaledmode...

Thanks to tell me what you think.

Julien this conversation is done to death. If you do a search in this forum you will find more than 20 threads on the subject. RED has clearly said many times that 2K scaled is never going to happen on the REDONE. Somehow this issue always resurfaces...

Bottom line: We all would like to have this choice but it ain't going to happen.

You can do this very thing in post, I think.

And I can't see how the *scaled* mode could increase the framerates, since the camera starts from the same 4K source info and actually does more processing [everything about 4K + scaling it in camera].

:detective2:

That would be correct. Hence recording 2K RAW from 4K RAW (i.e scaled) isn't going to happen. End of story.

Thank you for the info.

Thank you for your understanding.

Please continue to ask for functions that you would like. We are always interested in ideas to improve the product, although in this specific case its not possible.

No, you are not wrong. In fact that was the primary argument for having the mode. But what it really comes down to is that it's just not practical or really possible within the camera. As has already been pointed out, it would take more processing power to scale the 4K RAW bayer data to a 2K approximation than the camera can handle. Not to mention that doing a scaled version of RAW Bayer data would be quite a challenge if you want it to look good. Besides, storage is cheap. Over 3 hours of 4K 24fps in 300GB.

There is still occasional talk of RGB shooting modes in the camera and RGB modes are a lot more practical for delivering scaled recordings in-camera. I don't know if it will ever happen and I personally don't see a need for it when I would prefer the RAW data any day.

Thanks to tell me what you think.

Do a search, this was a hotly debated topic a while back.

Well, I haven't been here long so I haven't read all the threads - and I've only had my Red for a couple of weeks.

But I love the way you can shoot at 4k and then resize in RecCine before outputting (in my case) always to 1920x1080. This gives you a sharper image at HD or 2k and you can move around a bit if you want to.

I'm just loving it.

Welcome to last year. Untold dozens of threads have been dedicated to this subject. There was a very strong push here a while back for this option, but we were told that it was simply impossible due to hardware limitations.

Yep, this topic is so overdone.
