Hey guys,

I took the Epic W out for the first time last night for some low light tests.
After shooting around at 1600ISO, I noticed a very evident grid pattern with focus sharpening on.
The issue is much more pronounced on the monitor, but is still seen after loading the footage into RCX.

I'm running the newest firmware & did another manual & auto black shading. I experienced the same issue with both black shades.
Any ideas on solving this issue / has anyone else experienced this?

I've included some images below for reference of the monitor & the RCX views.

Happy Holidays and thank you in advance!

In my believe that's completely normal. Atleast I have seen it on every camera I've touched. I see it after iso 3200 with focus peaking on. that's how focus peaking on RED works.
I don't see anything wear on the Redcine grab tough.

Ive seen that when underexposed on the RED ONE M, Scarlet and Epic MX, Dragon and I've seen it on my Epic W with one clip that I severely underexposed on purpose. It's normal. Interesting thing is I didn't see it until I got to a shot with no light and at 5000 ISO.

I have the same thing when focus assist is on. It's not an issue for me as long as it doesn't show up on the footage, which so far hasn't happened. Are you adding sharpening in camera?

In my experience the grid shaped noise is only on the monitor and it won't be there in the footage.
I see it at extremely high ISOs and with sharpening applied. Must be an artifact of how the sensor is scaled for realtime monitoring.

The noise in RCX looks like it's the sensor though.

That's been my experience as well. I think it may even be part of the monitor itself. It's definitely not on the footage.

When you do fast-and-dirty downscaling of footage you get really subtle artifacts like that where the individual blocks aren't cross-filtering. It shouldn't be in the RAW footage though. The super-edge-enhance sharpening just reveals this fast-downscale artifacts performed by the monitoring pipeline which is usually invisible.

It's a display artifact that is not recorded.

Man, didn't think this would be worthy of Graeme's time! You guys rock.
Thank you everyone who responded so quickly.

I hadn't quite pushed my Dragon like this but I was excited to test low light on the Epic W once it came in, so I thought I'd share these images.

As noted by all of you, it looks like typical noise in RCX, I just wanted to confirm that I wasn't having some sort of fixed noise patterns that were only evident with in-camera focus peaking.

Happy Holidays to you all and thank you again for the quick responses.

Cheers!

This is an old thread, but I encountered this issue last night and freaked out -- thinking it was black shading or this or that.

So relieved to know the real reason -- that this is a display artifact that's not recorded -- through this thread. I confirmed this by going thru the footage and wanted to give a shout out to this thread and hope it continues to be found by people like me who might hit this in the future and not know the cause.

Thanks!
