  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Schoeps envy

Schoeps envy is perfectly justified! I have the Schoeps MS rig and have been using it for years. It is incredibly versatile and I still am thrilled by the sound even though I have done many recordings.
 
Yeah, the Schoeps seem nice, but I think I'm going to go with an 8050 paired with an MKH 30. The equivalent Schoeps package would run me about 4 grand... as opposed to the 2 for the Senns. I do like where they're going with the 8000 series, so if only they'd release the 8030 already!!!

I owned the Senn. MKH MS set up for a couple of years and it was very very nice. It has quite a different sound to the Schoeps mics - no better or worse, just different. Both Mid Side set ups are very nice.

Are you going to do your own mid/side setup? If so, why not get an MKH-418S? It's a 416 w/ a figure capsule as well, all in one mic.

I've never owned a 418S, but when doing some pre-purchase research, there were a couple of things that steered me away. First was that apparently you have to energize both channels with phantom to use the mic at all. With some M-S shotguns, you can use just the M shotgun portion for those jobs where all you need is a mono mic, but apparently not so with the 418S. Second, some have reported that the performance of the S capsule is not up to par with the other MKH mics, so a dedicated MKH 30 is a great improvement, not to mention that having a separate mic gives you more flexibility in other applications.

I also have a hard time getting useable range of mix options with a very directional M, like you get from a shotgun. I prefer to use cardioid or wide cardioid. An Omni M wouldn't be totally out of the question in certain circumstances (mostly music, not production environments). A hyper cardioid is useable, but positioning is very important to get accurate stereo imaging, where wider M's are a bit more forgiving in post and give a larger range of width / mix options.
 
It seems like the MKH30 is pretty versatile and highly regarded even among Schoeps devotees. What would happen if you were to pair it with a different brand... for example, with a Schoeps MK41? I'm very new to midside, in case you can't tell. Thanks again.
 
I wouldn't try to combine a Sennheiser figure-8 mike with a Schoeps directional. They have different tonal balances and characteristics. You really need to carefully match the mikes together to avoid weird response problems in M/S.

I've used an MKH30 and an MKH50 (and sometimes an MKH40) for M/S, and they work great together.
