Selling Scarlet

  • Thread starter Thread starter Adam Welch
  • Start date Start date
BMCC: 2.5K fits about 30 minutes of 24p video on a 256 GB solid state disk
BMCC 4K: 4K ProRes fits about 36min on a 240Gb solid state disk
Scarlet: 4K FF 6:1 is about 90 minutes of 24fps on a 256GB Red Mag

I have yet to shoot a feature that chooses BMCC over Red.

I prefer 4TB G Drives and those run around $320 for 4TB.

Some features we can finish with 16TB total ($1280) others 40TB ($3200) *Includes backup

Depending on DP Director Camera setting and A/B Cam the final count will be different.

Jeff,

4K RAW is 4K RAW, it requires a certain amount of pixels, almost 9MP.

Unless these cams are doing scaling (doubtful with 4K RAW, definitely not happening with RED) then they all have about the same amount of pixels. slight discrepancies are in look around area.

Fact is, some people prefer how canon looks some prefer sony, you prefer RED. No-one is right or wrong.

Enjoy your tool, stop celebrity death matching it with other peoples cams. Its best defense is images that people like not "look at the numbers"

These go up to eleven!

it is interesting to think about the pixel count in comparison, definitely learned more about the concept of 4k, 5k, 6k...(so 6.5k is fullframe?)

for me the #'s do make a difference. The roll off of highlights on an Alexa or Film are light years away from an 8bit DSLR package.

Numbers matter for sure, but you have to know what the numbers mean and what you are measuring.

6.5K has nothing to do with FF. Pixels of a certain size and density at 6.5K would be FF but that is besides the point.

Start here: 5K on the dragon has a different area than 5k on MX....

well you made a lot of sense there.

If it's a sensor and resolution game, you can get a DSLR package for $1500...5d mk3 has 8-bit RAW:thumbsup:...GH4 is 4k(still 8-bit)...F55 exports 10-bit RAW...sorry Sony RAW w/$4000 external recorder

Perhaps a better comparison is the BMPC 4k camera. 4k prores is twice the bitrate of Scarlet's highest bitrate. I'm not sure I follow on the hard drive budget, with drives costing about $30/TB these days, seems like you'd really have to roll all day every day to think about the cost of storage for BM cameras offsetting the much lower purchase/rental price...

Not sure that's accurate. Most producers (like me) expect DOUBLE or TRIPLE BACKUPS on G-RAID drives of what we shoot each day. And on a quick low budget shoot, spending an extra 1K on GRAID drives is nothing to ignore, nor the time it takes to back up twice the amount of media.

Jeffery, I think you mean outputs, not exports. The two things are very different.

The Scarlet and Epic MX are speced at 16bit, no-one who has measured it believes those numbers. Its more like 12bit.

And if those 4k 12bits are heavily compressed, noisy and a bit under-exposed I would prefer it as 2k 10bit prorez. thats just experience, not numbers.

Hi, I was trying to post this in the market place section

Hey Richie and welcome to RU! Find someone on the site, but use escrow services to give you peace of mind unless the sale is local is my suggestion... Also keep in mind the transfer of ownership fees and warranty being only 90 days. I'd consider getting the accessories used but maybe getting the sensor new with the extended warranty unless you have good camera insurance...and even then no one covers wear and tear which is why having a warranty matters...

And back to the thread I go:

Man I seen a lot of stuff in this thread that I agree with, or don't and it was an entertaining read to say the least... I think it touches on some real issues, how does Red (and its owner ops) market themselves in a 4k universe where the competitors are pumping out prosumer "good enough" camera technology? That and making a return on investment is a real issue for us, but I think it comes down to selling a skill set and not a rental package. I think like CML had in that article, being a one camera kind of guy would hurt anyone, even famous DPs. You should sell your talent man, not the camera, in general, and it will put people off when your always insisting just to get a mere kit rental...

That being said I am a camera nerd and love comparing the tool sets! Its fun and makes for good chatter! So I guess I'll share my story...instead of selling after being a complete commercial failure I double and tripled down on Epic then Dragon. Yes I am still a commercial failure, but I have a great rental cam that works more then me is the moral of the story...

I mostly work as a Tech, so I am thinking of grabbing a Rocket X and color accurate screen to also sub lease, and have available for my own needs when clients do call in. The way I see it is the stuff doesn't need to break even, you can always unload it. Yes ideally it breaks even and pays itself ten times over. But in reality if you can earn faster then it depreciates, selling is fine. I would sell my Dragon for plenty of things I guess, a set of master primes, or ultras that can rent for decades not years... That seems like a no brainer even... But for now I am happy holding on to it and booking it. Selling is not the end of the world guys, its also opening a new door to other opportunities. I admit I would feel awful and sick to sell my Red I love it so much, but if I was getting some Arri glass or an Alexa 4k I think I could still sleep fine at night haha...

In conclusion I'd weigh your options...maybe doubling down is a better way to go? Or selling a Scarlet Dragon or Epic gets you more? You do have some options man, consider them and go into it fully aware is all. Best of luck with whatever you go for!

PSS I used the F55 on a gig lately with Nexto and even as a Red guy I have to admit shooting prores on that or Arri is a damn easy workflow, and they do log and just make them grade it offset, its a great way to downsize techs like me, kill our day rates, and put us out of a job...but isn't that why arri said it in the first place in their marketing plan? :)

Thanks Brian, I'm keeping an eye on the market place thread.

cheers

Thought id jump on this thread as selling mine at the moment and give my 2 cents.

I honestly don't think people aren't willing to pay 60-80% of the retail value for a good used Scarlet kit, in fact i've had dozens of offers in and around that region. However each time a deal gets close it's always "I've just found a kit with more for less". Now I don't mind negotiating on price, but when someone is offering a kit worth nearly £15,000 for £5,000 it's pretty hard to compete. The thing is, I don't know why people offer their kits for such a discount, I love my Scarlet and would only let it go for a fair price. Maybe I am in a lucky position as I am not desperate for a quick sale, but I hope this trend doesn't continue or else I could see a lot of people losing money.
