  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sekonic wants you... er us... RedUsers. Have you seen this?

Very nice indeed!

Looks nice but I don't like that the spot meter is no longer built in.

on the positive side, losing the spot meter results in having a meter that's as small as the spectra (but 1/2 thinner), for half the price of a "combo". Then again, it depends on how often you actually use the spot meter. I have an "old" 558 that was my first digital meter, and now it's a backup to the Spectra. Can't remember when I use the spot meter the last time, it must have been literally years.

If they built this meter 10 years ago I would have bought it.

+1

At this point, it needs to just be an attachment with an iPhone / Android app. Not too wild about the form factor, touch screen implementation, etc.. Some of the features would be a nice upgrade over the meters I already have and then I look at my shelf where a couple light meters (including my Sekonic 758C) are collecting dust, I realize I have no interest in buying one of these.

Honestly, the only meter i think you can really use is a EV meter. No digital system meters the same, that is to say, ISO800 on a Epic, and ISO800 on a Alexa, and ISO 800 on a F3 are different, by a significant amount. Unless they build "LUTS" for each camera, to give you accurate stops, a normal light meter is not really going to give you great results.

An EV meter like the pentax Spot meter:

It's really awesome, cause you can measure the difference between two points quickly, and when you reach your "Middle grey" you meter that, against your items that start to clip, and you can spot check all the bright areas before the camera is even built, and start your G&E netting, gelling and cutting the scene.

...Hence why my light meters are all collecting dust. Not only that, but the metering and exposure tools built into most current cameras negates the need for a separate meter under most circumstances anyway. For the times I need an a meter, I guess I already have a couple that do the job just fine. I think this meter concept is about 5 years too late to market to be interesting.
