Hey guys,

Who can give me some feedback how the 17-50mm zoom is working out ?
Sharpness ? Mechanical ? Does it hold focus while zooming ? Breathing ?

General state of happiness with the lens ?

Feedback would be very much appreciated.

cheers

Hey Andy,

Thanks for your post.

I did not read through the first thread. I skimmed it but 50 pages of 'oh how awesome is this' after the lens was announced gives
me unfortunately very little insight....

And the second is interesting in terms of the vignetting.

Still looking for a little more insight or ideally a lens test though - especially after people have worked with these lenses for a while.

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?39669-17-50mm-RED-Pro-Zoom... - presume you've read through this? :)

and this - http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?61582-RPZ-17-50mm-5K-vignette-benchmark - I just browsed the lens section.

Not used this myself, so I can't comment... my focus is on older (and much heavier!) cine lenses :)

FYI the second link in regards to vignetting is on V1 of the lens.... the new V2 is much better from what was posted. Not sure if V1 with the hood removed is the exact same as V2....

yeeehawww. nice one. that is what i wanted to hear.

do you by any chance know anything about them vignetting in 5k on the epic ? do you have the V1 or V2 ?

thanks

axel

Very sharp, mechanically quite smooth, holds focus while zooming, breathes a fair amount, good contrast. For the price a very nice lens. The new front end makes it much easier to use. I'm quite happy with mine.

Axel, I shot a quick test for you but I can't get the files small enough to upload. I have V2. Here's the deal. It vignettes 5KFF at about 17 - 25mm. I just don't see this as a big deal. I shoot a lot at 2.4:1, which eliminates this. Besides, a 5K file is meant for pushing in. Just push in a couple of fields. No big deal.

damn. so much love. you are the best. thanks for the info.

+1

Then I'll add that I use it as a Variable Prime, when can't carry too much Glass, and or when the Primes are out with the other camera, also used it with a project I then intercut with Master Primes,
no one knew which were form which, now that really means that the 17-50 is that good... ;)

i had the chance to do test this lens at red studios hollywood, now what really surprised me was the focusing distance (almost 3 inches!), add to that the size, weight and construction of the lens.
needless to say i ended up ordering one a week ago to use it on SCARLET, can't wait!
