  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Searching for FX advice.

Hey guys, for my next project I need a device that makes it possible to generate sparks. These are intended to provide a more beautiful bokeh in the background while the artist performs in the foreground.
I have 0 experience with this kind of effect. Are there any devices for this or how do I best reach the destination without resorting to virtual effects?
Here is an example at 0:42 i need something like this. The direction is irrelevant, but something similar: https://vimeo.com/47598325

Best regards, and thankful for any advice!

How to create sparks inside of Blackmagic Fusion (now part of Resolve 15):

The effects you are asking about look like they were done by an effects specialist. Most of the sparks you see in that video look like spark charges and it's unlikely you will be able to recreate them without hiring an fx person to set it up for you. Depending on the set and where you are located it could also be fire safety issue.

Zirconium paintballs could be a safer, affordable alternative but the sparks from those move much faster and probably won't give the sinking bokehball effect you're looking for. Keep in mind the wall (engine) that those fx are coming off of is decently far from the subject, that contributes to their "slow" falling speed.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions!
So yeah I am familiar with Trapcode Particular and Cinema4D so an VFX solution is a possibility, but I was more lookin for a FX solution, because of the (maybe) better results.
I will check out those Zirconium paintballs, thanks for this tipp. Like I said, I don't want to recreate this specific scene, it is just a helpful way to describe what i mean. So we will film this at 120/240fps so maybe the faster speed of the Zirconium paintballs will be okey. It don't have to be that slow like in the video.
So I am still very thankful for any advice from you guys! :)

EDIT: Maybe it is possible to build a small cage where I can set up some coal and with some fast movement gettin some sparks? (Don´t think I am crazy right now, just some thoughts)
