I'm looking for a sealed backup body to have onset in Indianapolis from April 13th - May 9th.

Please email me at spencer (dot) meffert (at) gmail (dot) com with availability and location.

I remember reading about a network someone was going to try and create in order to deal with issues like these. Has there been any progress?

I would guess that it's a body in a case with an identifiable seal which if left unbroken is charged only as a backup body, but if the seal is broken it's charged at full hire charge as it may well have been actually used on the shoot.

Eric stated it exactly right.

Thanks,

~Spencer

The network was never concrete, but lots of us have done exactly what you're describing informally. Seal the body with a sticker over the ports, break the seal if you need to use it, pay the day rate for the body for every day it gets used, otherwise just pay the fee to have it live in a box on the truck.

Nice piece of mind.

Edit> That did not read the way I intended. Just wanted to say that a lower-cost sealed backup unit rental would probably only appeal to those who don't regularly rent their camera or regularly have use for it.

Why not just track camera usage hours? The hour meter in the RED One counts every hour the camera is turned on. Charge the client $$$ to take the camera and then bill them $$ for every new hour shown on the meter when they return it. Extra stickers, sealed cases and whatnot just seem like unnecessary extras.

Not silly if the original poster would like this service and will pay for it, and there are plenty of owner operators not working every day. Not just RED owner ops either. We're not all as lucky to be as busy as you :-)

Hour meter is workable, but some sort of seal (nothing fancy needed) makes it immediately obvious. It's up to the owner to decide what works for them in this scenario.

Haha... Didn't mean it quite like that. I'm not as busy as I would like to be. OK, that's not really true either, I wish my busy days were filled with more things I want to be doing.

I guess I'm just saying that the market for something like this would be rather limited. Obviously there's one person willing to pay for it and probably a lot more out there if the price is right.

I offer my camera as a back-up body here and there, but I'm just on-call for the necessary time period and guarantee that I'll deliver a working camera within a certain amount of time if and when the call comes in. I actually haven't had to bring my camera in as a back-up yet.

With this one, they're looking to tie up a camera for about 3 weeks. So one has to ask is it worth offering a significant discount on a one month rental if the camera doesn't get used the whole time it's out? For those with a camera sitting there, it's probably not a bad deal. Each camera owner (as an owner-op or a rental house or whatever) will have to assess the situation for themselves.
