Several people on this forum have stated that it IS possible to use a less expensive on-camera monitor if it has HDMI "&" SDI.

What good is that when the RED-One has no SDI output port?

An HDMI to SDI converter could cost as much, or more, than the monitor. And, they're big and clunky to attach to the camera.

Advise is appreciated.

Thanks.

There are 4 mini bnc ports on the side. 2 HD-SDI, 1 720p 1 Genlock.

You can get the adaptor cables or you can expand your Red One with the Element Technica Video Breakout Box, which I highly recommend you to buy.

Here is a link for a custom cable for $18.38

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?53007-Need-New-Mini-BNC-to-BNC-Cables

The red brand ones are like 29.99 if I remember correctly.

I know you want cheap, so there they are.

You can get an hdmi screen to work, it's just not your best option (IMO).

By the way the reason you might be having trouble is that the red doesn't output ab hdcp signal I Believe (consumer hdmi copy protection scheme) if you have a screen that doesn't require that you will have a better time.

Another thing to try with hdmi Is a higher end brand new cable. Boot the camera with the monitor plugged in and turned on.

Hope that helps.

Make life happier and get one of these... (as Bérenger metioned) they should just come in the package nowadays.

It's very kind of you guys, and I appreciate it. But, I cannot (at this time) possibly afford that BreakOut Box "AND" a monitor.

I'm trying to find an inexpensive 7" on-camera monitor (temporarily) with HDMI & HD/SDI that I can use on our new RED-One. Therefore, I have to be able to plug it into the HD/SDI port on the side of the camera, since HDMI to these cheap monitors does not work. Therefore, I need a way to do that.

Maybe there IS no solution, and I'm stuck without a monitor.

You might look for a used SmallHD Dp1x. It's an 8.9", can be powered from the D-Tap, connects via HDMI and allows Menu display. Not bad for the cost... used should run 7 - 800 US (I think). I mentioned "used" because the model is discontinued. You'll also likely find a used Red 5.6" for maybe $900 US here.

George,
did you not read above posts? or are you unclear on meaning? mini SDI ports.....your camera should have come with an adapter--mini SDI to full size. That simple. no need for breakout box then. If your camera did not come with the mini SDI to full size SDI, then i believe someone pointed out where you can buy one for less than $20usd. This is a question that you should have answered yourself with only a bit of research to know your camera. The outputs ARE labeled and rather self explanatory additionally you should know them and take the time to learn them.

How are things down there in Baja, Johnny? We are die'n to get down there and swim with the Whale Sharks, which has been a life long dream of ours.

Take care.

I hate to say this George, but i'm SO bored swimming with whale sharks now. They are all to often (almost daily) out in front of the Sandbar (Magote) and i seem to always be taking friends to see them.....fortunately i've been out on the sea for two weeks with other animals. BUT, an experience for most....come see them.

George,

I'm kind of shocked that anyone would spend $25000 without having seen and used the system? Its sort of due diligence to get these answers before you click to make a purchase.

Why did you decide to go about it this way?

George, for anything being shot indoors or in a studio environment, a 24" DVI monitor does a fantastic job, and cost less than $200.

In my personal experience, the Red 1 now works with about 90% + of them.

Everyone keeps talking about compatability issues but this was addressed a couple of years ago.

I also like them because you can see details in your framing and check focus with confidence, so much more than on a small LCD, which is not good for much more than a vague reference of what your shooting. Unlikely to notice the small cable in the lower left of frame on a small LCD, but going to jump out at you on a 24".

Try it, you won't be sorry.

Seconded

Thanks much for the tip, but I'll need a 7" on-camera monitor WITH a DVI. I see no reason why that should not work.

I assume it will hook up to the Red via an HDMI to DVI cable?

You won't find a 7" DVI, just HDMI, but they are essentially the sane signal minus embedded audio.

Yes, you will find 7" HDMI, but will cost a lot more than a larger monitor because it's specialty gear.

Oh, yes I did. I found several, and with both HDMI and DVI, but the one I chose is this one for about $250.oo with everything:

I'm sure it's a piece of crap, but if I can at least see an image it will do just fine for now. It's intended for reference ONLY anyway. If it doesn't work, I'll just return it, and try something else. It's worth a try.

Thanks for the tip.

I hope all is well there in Sydney. Of all the places I've visited in my travels, Sydney is the cleanest city I've ever seen. Australians really DO care about their environment and their wildlife. I wish the majority of the people in the USA felt the same.

HDMI is based on DVI signaling. All you need is a simple HDMI to DVI adapter or cable to connect between the two types of ports. No big deal. The monitor you linked to appears to have both HDMI and DVI ports or at least HDMI ports, but it accepts a broader DVI signal base. Anyway, looks great for the price!
