I need a converter from the Red signal to a PAL monitor better a converter that will work with PAL and NTSC monitors.
Signal from Red will go through eCinema, Sony HD or Panasonic BTLH 1700 monitors.
Anyone knows which one is better AJA, Miranda, Blackmajic or other including cost wise.
Thanks

Just bought the AJA HD10MD3 today. Just waiting for the D-Tap power cable now.
I think they have a cheaper one, the HD10C2, but it wasn't available in stock and I needed one quickly. Otherwise I would have bought that one.

I did some research at IBC, I think the Miranda was much more expensive, a bit overkill if you only need it for monitoring.
The blackmagic mini-converters don't do downconversion.

Evertz makes one, don't remember the price. If it's the same that I used a few years ago, it had a noticable delay.

Ly nx has also one, which isn't to expensive. Haven't tried it though.

Gefen doesn't make downconverters with HDSDI inputs, only HDMI. It's very cheap, but I don't know if it works with the Red. And it has only a 5 Volt power input, not the standard 12V.

Nils.

EDIT : After Reading the AJA HD10C2 specs again, I don't think it outputs composite when using an HDSDI input, so I'm afraid this one's out too...

Hey, this is really strange : when I use the word L y n x (remove the spaces) in a message, it is impossible to post it. It keeps saying "Posting Quick Reply - Please wait" indefinitly but doesn't publish the post. I had to add a space into that word in my previous message so it would let me post... I've tried it 10 times at least...
Am I the only one who gets that ?

Great info here, thanks. I'm just contacted Miranda and Aja.

From what I am getting about the AJA and the Miranda there all kind of models. And I haven't checked Gefen all the way or any others ...

AJA HD10CEA SD/HD-SDI to Analog Audio/Video Converter

What's the best way to give it 5V power on the camera?
Can it be powered from the USB port?

Are stating that the above device is the best and then asking how to power it or are you titling the above device and then asking in regard to it what it the way to power it?
I think the Miranda comes with a solution for the down convert power from 12V to 5V

I bought a blackmagic HD to Analog. Mini converter very price convenient.
Wait, I thought it didn't do downconversion ? That's what the guys at the blackmagic booth at IBC told me, and that's what I get when reading carefully the specs on their site :
http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/miniconverters/techspecs/
I don't see a "HD to analog" model, do you mean the "SDI to analog" ? In the specs, it says : "Component, NTSC, PAL and S-Video from SD-SDI input.
Component HD from HD-SDI input." So that would mean no downconversion... It says you get the composite signal only from SD-SDI input.

You don't need to, it has a +5 to 18 VDC power input, so it will work fine on a 12V battery, you just need the cable and you can power it from the DTap for example.

Be careful, I think most of the converters you are quoting are only doing Digital to Analog conversion, but not HD to SD downconversion. If you want to use it on the Red and want a PAL/NTSC output, you need a digital to analog downconverter.
So I guess that would remove number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
Nr. 6 should work (well I hope, I just bought it...).
Not so sure about Nr. 7, after reading the description on the B&H site, it says : "SD video outputs can be configured as YPbPr (Betacam or SMPTE/EBU-N10), RGB, composite, or YC (S-video). HD video outputs can be configured as YPbPr or RGB." No mention of composite when using an HD video input...
And Nr. 8, well from what I understood, it doesn't do downconversion, but maybe I'm wrong...

See, now it gets easy, there's only one left in your list...

Nils.

No problem mate... by the way Im in this search for downconverter...
Do you think n.6 is the best way???
Cheers

I don't know if it's the best way, but it's certainly a good way.
Not overly expensive, not too big and not too heavy, accepts 12V power input, has also SDI and component outputs...

I tried it today on my Red, it works fine.

Nils.

Thanks Nils... thats what i need.

If you want to take the signal out of the HD-SDI from the RED One and output an NTSC or PAL signal then you want a downconverter. The most common device for this on camera is the AJA HD10MD3. We have a bundled kit for this that will allow you to mount it to your battery plate and power it from the P-Tap, which is a very nice, petite package.

Problem With Pal Signal !!!

Problem With Pal Signal !!!

hello there,

try this - downconvert red's 720p or 1080 (play mode) signal to PAL (with normally working downconverter), and you cannot see that signal properly on your SD monitor. if you DO see the proper image - that means that red preview mode is NOT set to pal frequency (and this means that you have monitor capable to show 50HZ anh 60HZ pictures).

if you think everything is ok - try to record that signal... for some reason you cannot record that "PAL" to say dvd or dv tape, because that DVD redorder or DV tape recorder THINKS it's NTSC signal.... weird.

anyone has this same issue? (all above tested with TWO normally working cameras with different downconverters and monitors)

What was the model of your downconverter device?

I also had some problems like that, had to to change the setting at the camera playback output at SYSTEM>>MONITOR>>HD-SDI from 50.00 Hz to 59.94Hz and the monitor to NTSC and not PAL and it worked, but then the asistant who took the camera to work told me it didn't. Maybe it "jumped" back to a default (at the monitor).
The down converter was the AJA HD10MD3.
