  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scratch Rednode

Thomas,
There is a thread in wich I remember 4kberlin giving some advise about ways to negociate with colorgrading comercials, read it (making a quick search about his posts) but always remember that he has speedgrade instaled so even a good reference you will have to make your own tests, not because he will lie to you but because in a sense he is already envolved.

Anyhow, it makes no sense to need a 50.000$ online to access the 4k format of a 17.500$ camera. FCP doesn´t access 4k, its 2k, sadly.

100% in agreement.

Let's assume that R3D files are open today. Right now.

An iQ at 4K is still about 500,000. A Baselight8 (the only Baselight capable of realtime4K) is still more than 500,000. A Clipster that can do 4K realtime is more than 250,000. SCRATCH in the PrePost bundle with hardware is currently 55,000.

A Viper for purchase is about 90,000. Genesis is not available for purchase. Dalsa Origin is not available for purchase. Arri D20 is not available for purchase. Thomson includes no tools for Viper post. Genesis has no tools for Genesis post. Dalsa has no free tools for Dalsa post. Arri has no tools for D20 post.

RED has been out for 6 months and released not one, but three free tools (RED Alert, REDCINE, REDLINE) that handle a lot of post-production needs, and has established partnerships with two companies that handle editorial and finishing.

In the professional camera world, finishing tools usually cost a lot more than the cameras. Lenses can cost as much as the camera itself. In fact, you can buy two RED cameras for less than the price of ONE Zeiss DigiPrime. Yet I don't see a lot of complaining about the price of a Digiprime...

I fully understand that most people on this forum appreciate what RED is doing and what they have done and are just doing what customers do every day for their vendors - push.

But occasionally, there needs to be a bit of a reality check.

You've listed 11 products with 11 widely varying price points. If you're interested in all of them, you should contact either the company that makes them or a reseller rather than rely on uninformed hearsay on an Internet forum devoted to none of them.

I know the prices for most of them.

The question is more to reflect on the irony of the complaints that Scratch is too expensive, and why isn't "smoke/flame/lustre/pronto/clipster/baselight/xpri/speedgrade/filmmaster/pablo/Avid DS" Red ready yet, even though they mostly cost more than Scratch.

I see Lucas has already mentioned the price differences in some of the above mentioned.
