Hello,

I've an 24p /25p issue that I try to solve.

I've shot material in 4k 25p and done the color correction in Scratch. We output from Scratch 2k DPX log for the Lasergraphics film transfert.

The print looks great.

Now I would like to use these 2k DPX to create an HDcam master (REC709).

I imported them (they are about 25 folders of DPX) directly to Color changing the color space to LIN 0 - 1024 the pictures looks ok.

But the DPX show a 24p tag. When I change the import settings to 25p the clips get shorter (due to faster fps) I can increase the handles but it just create a freeze frame at the end of the clip.

Now is there a simple way to change the 24p tag of the DPX?
Why did it create a 24p tag? the original, and the EDL where 25p!
Do I have to ask for a new 25p DPX output?
Is there any solution in FCP or Color (sorry for that very out of thread question)?...

I still could import the dpx in FCP, ouput tiff and import them back to color...

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Patrick

THE SOLUTION IS IN THIS POST:

Questions:

1) What build of SCRATCH?

2) When you created the SCRATCH project, did you set the correct frame rate?

3) When you created the Construct, did you set the correct frame rate?

4) Are you sure that SCRATCH and Color are both referring the same metadata index when looking for frame rate?

Regarding the Color stuff, I'm confused about something...

A frame is a frame is a frame. Can't you just tell Color to output the frames at 25fps instead of 24?

Hello Luki,

I'm sorry that I can't answer the other questions as I was not the Scratch operator... I'll ask them.

For Color... (sorry for that headache)... you can render out QT in 25p but it interprets the 24p footage and double 1 frame every seconds like for a pull up.

I can't find a way of telling him "1 frame is 1 frame"... still looking.

Ps: perhaps there is a thing going on in the back ground of Color interpreting DPX in a (QT) wapper with a 24p timebase...??? I have no idea how color reads these data.

I don't know either... :)

But, SCRATCH is just rendering out DPX frames. It shouldn't matter what the timebase is, except possibly for conforming.

For playout - a frame is a frame. Play them back at whatever framerate is necessary.

I've repaired 24fps DPX metadata to 25fps using Gluetools,
great software, only problem is you have to duplicate the
files, ie make new copies of the DPX files with the correct
metadata.

If the DPX files are of your graded master, do you need to go via Color? You could just use Glue Tools to import the DPX files into FCP, drop them on an uncompressed 10 bit time-line, render all, then play out to HDCam.

Or are you looking to re-grade for the video version? In that case you could still do as above, but instead of playing out the time-line straight to HDCam you could export is as a self contained 10 bit uncompressed QT, and grade that in Color (25p is fine with QTs) using an EDL cut list.

I would not recommend using QT Pro for the conversion (no disrespect to the poster above) as you would probably end up truncating 10 bits to 8. I thoroughly recommend Glue Tools.

25p Dpx Color Import Problem

25p Dpx Color Import Problem

Thanks for the post but I still have the Color import problem. I shot at 4k 25Fps. Downrezed the footage to 2K and exported the footage as DPX, the project setting was 25fps. Now when I import it in Color, the tag says that it is 24fps, so i change the project and sequence setting to 25fps , rendered the footage sent back to FCP and I have a footage that does not play smoothly it gives me a still frame every second. Is there anyway around that?

This problem happens with any type of image seq from Red cine. (Cineon, Dpx, tiff)

So now i export as QT uncompressed 10Bit and grade from there, but i need more latitude to work with .

Please HELP. !

Hello.

I didn't do further tests yet... but did you try to use Gluetools to "force" a dpx sequence into a 25p stream?

I'll have to tackle this problem in a week.

Socialismo o muerte venceremos!!!

I had a variant of this issue blow up on me on a gig - after much (and positive) testing. After searching/questioning the boardsheads I found a few others with 25fps color issues. It's just unreliable.

BUT you could CC @ 24. They are only files anyway... :)

OR you could use the AJA wrapper to fool color to think it's a qt .mov - which makes (color) life easier.

This whole thing is a major pita.

Scratch, on the other hand is quite a bit more expensive, but it works.

Hehe, well Aja wrapper does not even recognize Dpx at 25fps from redicne. I am actually considering Scratch but is it windows or linux based?

Scratch is windows based and works really well. Currently it is the only "not filmlike" workflow option that can save you hours of rendering and terrabytes of storage.

It works, is excellent but there are a couple of "but why" things still having to be solved before I am a customer. It is not the quality of the software, though. The software and workflow with FCP/Scratch is really stellar.

dpx 24P/25P CONFORM Finalcut pro

dpx 24P/25P CONFORM Finalcut pro

We found THE solution!!!!

- Open your DPX sequence into Color in a 24p project (don't forget to select your "render destination folder" otherwise you cound't import your DPX sequence.
- Override the colorspace (if needed)
- Apply CC
- Render

and

- Open CINEMA TOOLS, it's an utility given away with FCP.
- Open file... the rendered QT
- Conform the clip and set the Fps to 25 (or what ever speed you want, the change is made in a fraction of second : there is NO transcoding...)
- Import clips into FCP

:-)

See you.
