  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Schneider Xenon FF Prime Lens Set Group Buy?

What would be our wait time on the group buy VS jumping in the Duclos Lenses wait list now? Would going for Duclos get us the set quicker?

No idea how many lenses they will initially ship. So it could happen that you get your lenses at the same time, no matter where you order.
 
I'm also very interested if it happens, I've been looking for a good set of lenses in this budget range.

Anyway, since I'm #1 on the Duclos list and the rumor mill says he may be the first in the USA to take delivery from Schneider.... Yeah, first, bitches!

OK, now that I got that out of the way, I'd be interested in the group buy as well... If it's not something I'd have to wait around for... Being first could be worth its weight in gold. Yeah, this group buy thing, if even possible, is probably not for me. But I wish you guys all the good luck and well wishes I can muster.

I went together with Joost Kelderman to the Schneider Kreuznach booth and met there with Dietmar Kanzer (sales manager) and Dieniela Kesselem (product manger).

First of all: they are great! Really nice people and it's a joy to talk to them.

It's not clear if there will be a group buy, since they don't want to upset their dealers. More info on that in a month or so, after they discussed it further internally.

They are very interested in doing one, to reach the people they designed these lenses for directly, and the discount could be quite fundamental (don't expect anything like 50% or so, but neither just a few percent like on some summer sales). If there is a group buy, it would start Q1 2014 including the 25, 35, 50, 75 and 100 with delivery around NAB, with the 25 shipping slightly later.

Anyway... those who put in a pre-oder at Duclos or other shops don't have to worry; you get your lenses first!

Yep, thanks... More time to save is actually good (for me), the 25 being part of such a group-buy (if it comes together) would make it even better.

Lets hope the internal discussion lead to a YES! ;)

Another approach for a group buy would be to go to one of their dealers instead of direct through Schneider. Perhaps a dealer would be willing to give a discount knowing that they're going to be able to sell a good number of sets in one shot. OTOH, the few dealers I know of who are getting these already have wait lists for them and no commitments yet on shipping quantities or dates. I think there are too many unknowns right now with the lenses not being released to production yet.

I'm hoping to get my set by the end of this year, but something tells me it will be more like end of Q1 next year...
 
Here's my take - and I don't want to be a downer, because I really enjoy the level of optimism… But:

-These lenses are going to be hot
-They are going to be in short supply (at the outset)
-They are from a large company that's been in business for eons which doesn't need to discount right away to generate sales and recoup R&D costs

In combination those points make me feel that a 'Group' buy won't happen, at least until these have been on the market for a while. Most group buys we've seen have been with smaller start-ups who do need that initial push to get their product out in the market, generate buzz, and start rebuilding cash to cover R&D. Or the group buy (one in particular) that wasn't a deal at all...

I know if I was Schneider - I'd be charging a premium for the first 50 sets… because I could get away with it.
