I purchased this "Red essentials" filter set by Schneider thinking they'd work excellent--I've used Schneider NDs on cameras other than Red with great results. http://www.filmtools.com/schneider-red-essential-kit.html

The first shoot I did with them I dropped a 1.2 in without the 750 IR filter and my footage had a horrible magenta cast and dirty blacks, which led me to believe it is likely IR pollution. Yesterday, I used the .9 instead, this time with the 750 IR filter, and its just as bad. Even the .6 is ugly, and the IR filter doesn't seem to have any effect.

I've done some research on this... http://www.reduser.net/forum/archive/index.php/t-81716.html and it seems like no one is having positive experiences with these.

I'm constantly stacking filters so buying the IRND's is out for me.... so a few questions... 1. Has anyone had good experiences with these/can offer some tips as to how to use them without getting discolored, muddy footage? 2. Why do I not see a difference with or without the IR filter? 3. What set of ND's should I be looking at that can be stacked, or is there a better option for an IR filter than the 750? Seems people like the Formatts, but can they be stacked?

THANKS REDUSER

The MX sensor is asking for a HotMirror or ND+HM, Tiffen or formatt have good solutions.

I own too and suffer the 750IR from Schneider and never use it since the last disaster; Schneider or, best said, the Schneider distributors must increase knowledge about his products and the right camera to use them.

Hello Chad,

If you cut more than ND9 without using any IR cutting you'll have problems (IR pollution).

I have a couple of Schneider Platinum IRND filters (irnd 9 - 18). If you don't stack them, they are ok, not the best on Epic but workable if you put some magenta in color correction (-6). If you stack them in bright hot sun or when there is a lot of IR like in tungsten light (wich you rarely use ND's) they are just horrible...with the Epic. I use them because I don't like the mirroring/gosting artefact you somtimes get with Hotmirror filters.

Now as we buy filters for a life time and Epic is going to grow wings with Dragon coming along... there are some speculations to do.

It looks like the nominal ISO of the camera will be 2000. So 1.3 stop more to cut.
But It also looks like they'll improove IR cutting in their OLFP filter.

Who knows what holds the future? Hope they will test the IR filter part while doing the coverage tests on next "Dragon" shoot out.

See you.

Patrick
