We are a post house and have been handed a series of RED clips. They were shot on a camera with the latest build of software.

Some of the clips come into REDCine (v3.12) as black clips. These same clips can be opened in RedAlert! (or Quicktime) and can be seen, but attempting to render them in RedAlert! causes it to crash. RedRushes seems to be able to render out these files without an issue.

The footage was shot 4k 16:9, and the problem clips were the first ones shot that day, until a battery had to be replaced and the camera was rebooted. The clips shot after the reboot appear as normal in RedCine.

Any explanation as to why these clips don't show up in RedCine? I admit we know very little about the camera, as we are only involved on the post end.

Thanks!

These clips may have corrupted or even missing QT reference files. Check their folders and delete any QT proxies you find there and have RedAlert! make new ones. That might help.
Make sure you do this with the current version of RedAlert! or you may loose your sound. If in doubt, backup the original QTs.

I'll try that, but the QTs are there and appear to be working. We have imported all of the footage into an Avid using the _M clips for offline purposes. We don't see this issue until we run the footage through RedCine.

But I will try this and report back.

I've heard of a situation where the meta data got a bit corrupted and the saturation came in to REDCINE at 0, making the clip black and white. Resetting the saturation brought it back to normal.

Have you looked at the exposure and ISO data to see if it's off?

WARNING - Don't delete the original Quicktime reference files permenatly if your clients recorded audio to the camera! It's my understanding there is currently no way to get you audio out of just the R3D files. The original refeference files are required for access to the audio and making new reference files in RedAlert will take away your access to the audio in Final Cut.

Used to be true, but for months now new QT ref files made in Red Alert do have audio.

For some reason, Redcine imports all the clips with the exposure set to zero. Go into the color section and reset the exposure (click on the value and a little number pad will pop up. Click the "R"). This should get rid of the black screens.

Julio,

THANK YOU! That was it.

Very strange, though. The exposure for ALL of the shots is 0.00, and when I click "Exposure" followed by the "R" nothing changes numerically, but I can now see the clip.

By clicking "R," am I still using the color information recorded by the camera for those shots? We don't want to alter what the director has set up for us unless we have to.

Also, any idea WHY this happens? In our case, it wasn't the whole timeline, or a whole card. Just a certain section of clips set this way.

Thanks!

Same black clips in Redcine

Same black clips in Redcine

Im getting the same thing. Clips look fine from the QTs etc. but when imported into Redcine appear black. Resetting the exposure on each clip fixes it.
Footage from a shoot with a different Red camera, import without problem.
Build 16 on each camera, 4k 16:9 on both cameras. Even the slow motion shots at 2:1 comes in black. May be a data error in the R3Ds?
