If you have to buy a red camera now, is better to buy a new Scarlett W or an old Scarlett?
Which of this two camera will be upgrade?
And why the Scarlett W is cheapest than the old Scarlett?

Tnks

Scarlet-W has many advantages.

#1 DSMC2 benifits (better in low light, interchangeable OLPFS, Mini Mags etc etc)
#2 5k dragon sensor
#3 in line for future upgrades (scarlet MX cannot be upgraded)

this is just a short list there are many other reasons and other threads that have explored this same issue

am new to red system, I picked up a red scarlet mx for £7000 and now that the Raven is a 4.5K i really want to sell the MX
and get a raven. as the raven is about the same price i payed for the mx and the cheapest in the dragon censor line up.
if am not wrong the scarlet W is a whole lot more expensive that the MX

Also keep in mind that even though on RED official website Scarlet Dragon is more expensive, in the market place used Scarlet Dragons are going for very reasonable prices, I saw full packages for 15K or less some even included v-Locks. They will also drop in price in the next few months even more.

To add on to that...

There are 3 Scarlets across 2 Scarlet bodies.
DSMC1: Scarlet-X MX (aka Scarlet-X aka Scarlet MX), Scarlet-X Dragon (aka Scarlet Dragon)
DSMC2: Scarlet-W Dragon

Scarlet MX has a 5K MX sensor for shooting 5K stills and 4K motion.

Scarlet Dragon has interchangeable OLPFs.
Scarlet Dragon has a 6K Dragon sensor, for shooting 6K stills and 5K motion.
Scarlet Dragon records higher data rates than Scarlet MX.

Scarlet-W Dragon has a 5K Dragon sensor and records higher data rates than the other Scarlets.

If I had more time, I'd give all of the differences, but maybe somebody else will reply with those. Data rates, etc.
Check the specs on red.com and the DSMC Operation Guide.

Get a Scarlet/Dragon (DSMC1) only if you really need/want 6k for stills/timelapse and access to more affordable second-hand accessories. If you're on a budget, it's a nice option to get one used.

Otherwise Scarlet-W is the superior camera (higher fps and datarates, DNxHD/ProRes, auto blackshade and much more). A DSMC2-camera is just better, that's the way to go.

I'd have thought getting a Nikon D800 for almost nothing secondhand for stills / timelapses would make more sense, and then pairing that with a DSMC2 camera.

A camera dedicated to photography is a better choice for photography, and you can use the lenses on both cameras with the right mounts and/or adapters... :)

If you need it now, there are only Scarlet MX or Scarlet Dragon.

But of course, the Scarlet-W is better, but it's also not available for new order until early 2017 (and let's be honest it will probably be March/April)

Shot on Scarlet Dragon @ 5k.

Still a bloody amazing camera if you ask me.

Hi Christopher,

Did you shoot this? I think although grading here is good as someone else said, the main thing in this trailer is the beautiful use of light, supported by very good set design (to accommodate lightning fixtures) and costumes plus real thought about colour scheme. grading just emphasised what is good in the first place.

Great work!

p.s what lenses?

Shot on my Scarlet Dragon with Zeiss CP 2's. I wrote and Directed the film and graded it myself. My good friend William Collinson was the DOP and we worked together for months doing tests and visual treatments/colour pallets before making the film. All filmed in Johannesburg South Africa.

We've recently just finished the film. Going to be in LA at AFM in November seeking distribution. So I think a big thank you goes out to RED for making a camera that can help the little guy make his film. I guess my point is, this is what Scarlet Dragon is capable of. So if you need something now, this is what is available.

Thank you for the comment's gentlemen.

If you need a Red now, a Scarlet-W isn't even a consideration... But a Scarlet Dragon still has a Dragon sensor in it... And panavision is releasing a camera based on a Dragon next year...

To paraphrase Monty Python, it's not dead yet! ;)

I love to hear those stories about people working hard to make their dreams come alive, would be good to watch the all film! Please let Willam know he did a great job.
I absolutely agree that a camera like the Scarlet Dragon has an amazing value, on the other hand, if you are making a 3-4 weeks of a low budget shoot, most times you could scrap the money to rent whatever you like, Alexa classic are going really cheap on rentals recently, the same goes RED Dragon.

In the right hands the Scarlet-X is also a fantastic camera, and pricing is so cheap this days.

I just desided to jump out of the upgrade-race and stick with my Scarlet Dragon, as it is an absolutely fantastic camera that'll cover all my needs in the forseable future. Guess there will be allot of cheap dsmc1 gear for sale soon too (modules, 1.8" RedMags etc)
I use 6K allot for stills, animation and timelaps and would miss that In Scarlet W...

besides that, for £7000 its a full package, as the raven will cost you £9000 to get it running with minimal storage.
