  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlett S35 and FF35 why only 30fps ???

Sorry if this has been covered but I don't understand why the Scarlet S35 and FF35 have a maximum fps of 30 in 4k and 6k when the lower 2/3 models offer up to 120fps in their recording formats.
Please excuse me if I am wrong but I don't see the point in this. I am seriously looking at the ff35 Monstro as I think this is well positioned price wise and quality wise between the lower and upper extreems it has Redcode 100 which does not compete with the Epic X's Redcode 250, so why not allow for more fps ?
Just a quick question will the current S35 lenses work with the FF35 body ?
Regards
Till

Well this is pure speculation Till, but the data rate for Scarlet is 42MB/sec, that compares to 225MB/sec for the equivalent Epic models (which do offer high frame rates) so the electronics required to support the higher data rates in the Epic brain are naturally going to be more substantial than those of the Scarlet brains. Those electronics are most likely going to be the bottleneck that prevents higher frame rates in such large resolutions (5K and 6K).

If you really need high frame rates that badly, just buy a Scarlet 2/3" brain as well. It'll only be $2,500 and it'll allow you to shoot 120fps when speed is more important than s35mm DOF.

And as for the lenses. The information Red have shown so far suggests that you will be able to put a PL-mount on the FF35 Scarlet, which means s35mm lenses will work just fine, albeit at a lower resolution (around 4K), but you'll get the added benefit of higher dynamic range.

... There will be quite a few pleasant surprises on Dec. 3rd. But one thing should be kept in mind. You have to pay extra for frame rates. It is fairly easy and inexpensive to build a 5fps camera these days. It becomes quite a different story to get 30fps. 100fps is exponentially more difficult.

It isn't just the sensor, although that is a big cost. Passing large quantities of data requires a significantly more complex electronics package and heat management program. Add lower quantities of production to the mix and buying frame rate capability costs more. A lot more.
....

Enough said

Scarlet with more fps is simply Epic

The old specs on Scarlet FF35 included 3K @ 60fps.

This total lack of overcranking above 2K right now in the FF35 Scarlet specs is going to be a huge, HUGE problem for many of us. I hope we can talk Jim into bringing back 3K@60fps. If enough of us feel strongly about it, Jim has a history of listening to legit spec and feature requests.

Not sure what you are referring to—the S35 and FF35 both mention a 72fps burst mode. The question becomes how long is a burst. One of these cameras will be what I buy (subject to change).

My hart is sold to the s35, but I'am a little disapointed its only 30fp.
Any indie filmmaker knows how important a good slow mo is in movie.
All are talking it does only 30fp , but how about the 72fp in 2K , does it run the 72 fp or not? Can omeone clear this out,

All by all this is a wonderfull collection, dough I does not understand the policy here! Scarlet 2/3 has 3K and the s35 has no 3K ???? but 2K ?, strange strategy? or is the Scarlet 2/3 a 2K blow up to 3K , Hhmm
Mayby there is a techical limitation 3K 72fp cant be done on the s35
ra, ra ,who knows, but the more I think about not having 3 K on the s35
the more depressed I get. 3K is one of the best formats to handle for post, then why s it not available???? :waaa:

How many cameras will you be able to buy for $7000 that shoot 5K on a s35 sensor? These specs are unheard of and you are getting depressed because it only shoots 2K at 72fps???? and only 30p at 5k?????

Don't be silly!:clown2:

First off, I'm not disappointed at all. I'm really liking the S35 SCARLET. Seems to be a real good fit for the projects I have in mind. And yes, there are most likely some hardware limitations in regard to the sensor size, REDCODE quality, and brain processing power to factor in for 60fps in 3K...

...However, I hope it's not asking the moon in stating that I think a 3K mode offering even 48fps would really make it feel complete. (Even if that means a slightly lower quality in REDCODE in that mode).

The logic is that 2K 72fps is great, but if I only need 48fps (which in certain environments is used quite a bit more often than 72fps), I would hate to have to drop down from 5K or 4K to a 2K mode if I didn't have to. Keep in mind that this would be 2K de-bayered, so for theatrical, 3K sure would be nicer.

my $.02

2K is simply not viable for 1080p and 2K finishes. If you buy FF35 Scarlet, by the time you add on all the extras, you could be looking at $20 or $30K. For that kind of loot, it is totally reasonable, IMHO, to request at least some basic 3K overcranking. I could buy a badass new Jeep Rubicon for that kind of money.

For a lot of shoots, like music vids, 48 or 60fps is absolutely mandatory.

If there is no legit overcranking for FF35 Scarlet, I will have to go for the 2/3" or rob a bank and get FF35 Epic. I need the framerates.

I suppose no one is stopping you from requesting it, but my reading of Jim's comment is that they have found that the hardware that they could buy with the Scarlet FF35 price tag, just doesn't support what you need. Hence, the Epic.

Are there other cameras available under $10k that can do 3k at > 30 fps? There's always the 2/3" Scarlet... or maybe a used Red One, eventually, but I don't think their resale value has fallen that far yet.

People seem to be forgetting that 120fps is going to be available to them for only $2,500 extra (Scarlet 2/3"). That sounds pretty damn reasonable to me.

And if that $2,500 is too much of a stretch for your budget, just think how little that same brain will cost to rent.

And just as a reminder, here's what the 72fps available in bursts on the Scarlet 35mm cameras will look like (footage shot by Shawn Nelson):

http://brainspasm.com/red/JumpinInTheRain.mov

It may only be 72fps. But it's still pretty damn slow-mo.

Well this is pure speculation Till, but the data rate for Scarlet is 42MB/sec

Where does that come from? The chart shows 42 for the 2/3" Scarlets, but "Redcode 80" for the S35 and "Redcode 100" for the full-frame 35.

i hope you mean this as a joke

A joke?

Allwright explain me then what will you do if you need a good slow motion
on 3K or 4K ? fix it in post? I dont think so. Ok I overlookt the busrt 72fp on
5K, you could downconvert it to 3K or blow up the 2K to 3K. But it would have been a lot better if we had it on 3K instead of on 2K.
Anyways, defently you need the variable framerate, or mayby you never shoot slo mo . And from my point of view I am thinking at the storage you need on 5K.

Hey, Iam not complaining at all, I 'am pretty satisfy allready as I said.
But my goal is to shoot mostly on 3K and 4K thinking about the storage data
you need. And now you are going to say, then why you dont choose for the
Scarlet 2/3, well let me unlighten you, becourse the s35 has a bigger sensor with leads to 4.4.4 and a better dynamic range, better in low light conditions and a lot more.
