*** This thread is no longer correct. It discusses the 2/3" Scarlet models, for which RED has discontinued their development. Preserved for posterity, but it is no longer relevant to any current RED cameras. ***

I just posted this in another thread, however, I feel there are many who need this info but would probably not see it unless it had a more appropriate name for the subject matter...

---------------------------------

Just to clarify some stuff.

SCARLET refers to 2/3"

EPIC refers to S35

There used to be a Scarlet in the S35 lineup which would enable you to mount Nikon/Canon glass. That was when you would hear Ted speak about SLR glass on your interchangeable Scarlet. (which is partly the reason there has been some confusion regarding the Interchangeable 2/3" Scarlet brain and some people's disbelief that there will still be a Scarlet with Interchangeable Lens mounting options)

The SCARLET will include 2 models.

F-SCARLET (Fixed Scarlet): will include an 8x Zoom lens which is unremovable due to its full integrability of the lens and the brain. It has an FF35 equivalent focal length of 28mm-224mm. This lens will be have a speed of T2.6/F/2.4 throughout the full zoom.

C-SCARLET (Cinema Scarlet): will be considerably smaller due to it's lack of the 8x zoom lens. It will utilize the new lineup of RED Mini Primes which have a "projected" cost of $900-$950 for each prime.

RED Mini Primes which have been mentioned are the:
6mm 1.5
8mm 1.5
16mm 1.5
25mm 1.5
50mm 2.9

The C-Scarlet will also have the option for a C-Mount and a B4 Mount for other lenses which are already on the market. Now that the S35 Scarlet has been moved to the EPIC lineup, there has been no mention from RED, regarding Scarlets with a mount for SLR glass from Nikon/Canon.

Hope this helps...

Great post. I really hope they do create a Scarlet S35. that's the model I think people will really buy. Great body , Great lenses from nikon or Canon. That's where the fun starts.

Scarlet Cinema should take the same interchangeable lens mount boards as Epic. So standard PL (needed for S16mm lenses) and the Canon and Nikon mounts could be fitted as well as B4, C, and Red mini-PL. Don't know if Scarlet would provide the software support for electronic lens controls for the Canon and Nikon mounts though. 35mm still lenses are not the best choice for Scarlet.

I hope the mini-Red mount is designed to be able to use screw on flange adapters for C-mount lenses. Converting them to mini-PL would be a much more user friendly approach.

david, i believe the scarlet cinema has a different mounting system than the epics, so i'd say thats a no-go

Will f-scarlet and c-scarlet be released at the same time, or will f-scarlet be first to ship?

Also, I have confusion regarding epic-s. It has been said that epic-s distribution is depended after all orders on epic-x are filled, but Jim mentioned he would like to roll these out at the same time (tentatively September), the same time the Scarlets go out... so I don't know how it would be possible for epic-s to release then, when epic x is even out, just the epic m.

Thirdly, Joseph: I heard you say (at least I thought you did in recollection) that the c-scarlet will not have touch screen integration like the f-scarlet and perhaps not rack touch screen focusing. Is this true?

I don't think so. I think it is exactly the same basic lens board. It was originally when they still had the S35 in the Scarlet line. Why should they want or need to make two different PL mounts for Epic and Scarlet for instance? I guess we will find out for sure when they make the release announcements.

Thanks Joseph. I think the C-Scarlet is going to be especially awesome with some classic S16 glass :)

So far they have indicated the Scarlet fixed will ship first, then the Cinema. Epic-S won't likely ship until all of the pre-ordered Epic-X models have been delivered. Though that might not take as long as many think with a full up running production line.

C-Scarlet mini-primes are fully manual, not electronic lenses. But they are geared for follow focus and Jim has hinted they may build external motor systems that could support electronic focus and zoom functions with manual cine lenses. Some of the Epic Gunner rig pictures showed motors mounted.

Nice.

Anyone know the latest approximate cost of the C-Scarlet?

Thanks for posting this Joseph.

Thanks for posting this Joseph.

Last official figure was $2750 for the body only, but that was before it had HDRx, which adds about $1K to the cost. So probably around $4K for the body, but to have a working system you need a monitor or EVF, power, and the CF or SSD modules, at the very least. So probably at least $7K for a working kit.

Well the last target price talked about was $2750 + $1k HDRx premium for the Cinema brain only, so $4k-ish? It's anybody's guess for now. Hope Red will know pretty soon what their costs and final pricing will be. They won't say when or how much until they absolutely know for sure themselves this time around. Can't blame them considering how much grief they have gotten for missing deadlines and price targets up to now.

I really hope they provide a nikon mount for the scarlet cinema. The crop factor is a big advantage to me as I do a lot of long lens work. I want to put a 300mm nikon lens on my scarlet and shoot 1200mm-ish equivalent @ 120fps. So good for natural history and action stuff.

the scarlet s35 is now the Epic-S and that's the same lens mounting options. the interchangeable 2/3 is absolutely different... if you don't believe me look at the pictures, and if you've seen one in person i'm not even sure why you would consider them the same.

The lens mounts should be the same on Scarlet Cinema and the Epic line. It's all the DSMC system. Same goes for redmote, etc.

I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on a set of mini primes! I wonder if all of them will be released concurrently with the interchangable, or if they'll trickle them out a couple at a time

Will I be able to mount M42 lenses to the C-Scarlet? If yes, with what adapter? Or mount?
