  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet X with Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 Video?

Can someone talk me out of buying a Zeiss 21mm/2.8 and instead going for this cheaper lens? Sigma is a whole stop faster. Can anyone who owns both take a comparison shot with each at 21mm on a Scarlet or Epic? Please. Thanks.

This link was posted in the Sigma/GL 18-35 group buy thread. While lens choice is not all about charts, I thought this to be pretty enlightening. Enough so that I put a deposit down to pay $3K for the re-housed version.

I simply haven't found one bad review on this lens so I went ahead and order it. Should receive it in 5 days I think I made the right decision. Now my only thing is should I keep my Sigma 35mm 1.4 or should I sell it and grab something else? Can't wait to compare the both on my Scarlet!

Comparing the Sigma 18-35 to the Zeiss ZF 18 is one thing, but comparing it to the Zeiss ZF (or Contax) 21mm is another.

The Zeiss 21mm is SUPERB, and covers FULL FRAME. The ZF 18 is good, but the 21 is on a whole other level.

That said, the Sigma 18-35 looks like a beast.

Is this "Sigma" only for Nikon Ai mounts? I have a Sigma 10-20mm that would not mount well at all with my Optitek. Scary product, it now lives on my Nikon still camera and breathes like post efx at times, which I actually sometimes like when I can cut around it...

It's out for multiple mounts, i use the Canon version and it works without issues (well there is that firmware-bug when you try to go under 1.8). Its also in the new Art-line and does come with a way better build quality than older Sigmas.

They also recently updated their warranty on new products to 4 years in the US. That kind of confidence in their product was big for me. They also supply mount conversions now too just in case.

This lens breathes less than some cinema zooms and is near-parfocal. It is not unit-focusing.

The F mount version should ship soon, from what I understand. I got an EF-mount version a few weeks ago. There's a bit of distortion (and lots of flare, just tons) and some onion bokeh that gets a bit fussy in tricky situations (much like the Rokinon 35mm and 24-70mm f2.8 II), but overall it performs way beyond reasonable expectations. I A/Bed the Canon 17-55mm (a favorite lens) with the Optimo 15-40mm shooting bright, super high contrast day exteriors and wide open the Optimo is much crisper, no comparison until you stop down around f4/f5.6. The Sigma is crisp wide open; center sharpness does not improve between f1.8 and 5.6 as it appears to be diffraction limited (at 18mm) wide open, which is ridiculous. That said it has significantly more distortion than the best cinema zooms.

It has a nice "look" too. If you like these focal lengths an can figure out a way to reliably pull focus, get it.

However its AF is not great, but not awful either, as some Sigma lenses are, and for stills IS is nice.

Has RED said they'll be mapping this in the next firmware? That is to say, on the current firmware it still rolls more open than f1.8 and freezes, right?

Right, that bug has been confirmed by a few users. Don't go below 1.8. ;)
Jarred said it will be characterized soon.

I have one I am going to get to use for a week. Any specific tests you guys would like me to do?

I'm always interested in seeing 18, 24, and 35 shots wide open. Preferably .r3d stills and with a skin tone in there.

Just got Lens today!
