Hey guys I'm shooting a music video using my Scarlet X with a Jib, to which I have never used before. I don't have a remote follow focus available, could someone give me advice on keeping things in focus when shooting. I have the sigma 18-35mm and the tokina 11-16mm as my lenses. Anything would be helpful. Thx

Zoom out as wide as you can, given your desired image. (Wider will give you more leeway.)
Close aperture down as much as you can, also given your desired image. (Smaller aperture will give you more leeway.)
Calculate the depth of focus of your lens at that focal length and aperture.
Focus your lens at a point that will keep the closest and farthest points that you want to stay in focus in your scene, given the DOF you calculated.

I hope that makes sense. :-)

Not sure exactly but I found a camera store that rents them in Vegas, so I will check once I get there. I just know they mentioned that they don't rent remote follow focus. I know you shoot a lot of music videos but do you shoot with Jib at all and if so how do you like it?

If you are not going too high, what about a longer flexible shaft? I´d prefer that for a more cinematic look.

Cheers, Ulf

Edit: Brandon just beat me ;-), you can get them slightly longer and if you use a ladder you could cover some movement, not as elegant as an electrotic remote but still will do the trick.

Hi Donnie,

If you have a redmote, you can setup a key map preset to set the rotary dial as a focus wheel. Works pretty well with the sigma using the latest firmware. You will get slight stepping but on a wide lens its not that noticeable. Not sure if it works on the tokina as I don't have that lens. For monitoring, if you don't have a RF unit like a paralinx, run an SDI down the jib arm (you might need to do this for power anyway?) and attach a monitor to where you are operating the jib from.

Good luck!
