Hey Everybody, (first post)

I am a veteran going to school with my GI Bill, i've waited quite some time for the SCARLET to be released (not as long as many of you i'm sure). It's finally here and now I'm trying to figure out what to purchase, I will be going with the AL Canon mount, as i've been shooting with DSLRs (Zeiss zf primes should do just fine for now). I do photography so I'll use the DSMC SIDE HANDLE, since thats the case, should i stick with REDVOLTs or invest in another means of power? Then there is the RED TOUCH 5.0" LCD, should i pick up a less expensive monitor as i am going to use the SIDE HANDLE( or is this the best monitor)? I'm thinking 3x 64GB SSD. Then theres an evf, rails, and other accessories. I'm just trying to weigh out my options, and want to know if you guys had to spend about 20k on a system, how would you go about it?

Heres what i have so far

SCARLET-X W/ AL CANON MOUNT / SIDE SSD - $9,750.00
DSMC SIDE HANDLE - $950.00
REDVOLT (2?) - $390.00
RED STATION REDMAG 1.8" - $250.00
REDMAG 1.8" SSD 64GB (3?) - $2850
DSMC TRAVEL CHARGER - $125.00
= $14,315

Thanks,
Chris

(a project i lit, http://vimeo.com/31871522 any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thank you)

REDVOLTs are the way I'd go, with an AC adapter for backup. It is revolutionary the first time you feel the power of these cameras, handheld, untethered, and with that little battery inside the handle powering the whole show.

REDMAG 1.8" SSD 64GB (3?) - $2850

3x 64GB REDMAGs is the worst possible deal on REDMAGs you can get. Get one more for half price and a free box, or get a larger capacity SSD and get per GB discounts.

I'd hold off on deciding about REDVOLT until they release power specs for Scarlet. If it is like epic, you'll need 10 REDVOLTs and a couple chargers to get through the day with AC power nearby, 20 in the field if you dont have AC power to charge from. And you'll be swapping batteries every 20-30min which might be too much for some to handle and may not work at all for certain shooting styles. Then again if you want to use it as a still camera you may not have any other option...

Most of the accessory decisions will depend on how you like to shoot and what you want out of the camera.

If you've got a 20k budget...

You're going to want more than just 2 volts. They run out fairly quick on the Epic, and though it's been said that they last longer on Scarlet, I just don't think 2 is enough for serious shooting. If you're used to DSLR shooting, you're in for a completely different experience. I recommend at least the Volt 4-pack with two chargers minimum so you can have two at the camera and two charging at any given time. The 4-pack save you a little bit of money and give you a battery case.

For the REDMAGs. If you're already getting 3 64GB, might as well spring for the 4 pack. It's only $500 more for the 4th one and a case. Basically, it's Buy 3 get the 4th one half off plus a free case. Again, so you can have two at the camera and two at DIT offloading.

For the monitor, the only trouble with shooting with any other kind of monitor is power. You need to get power to the monitor somehow and Red's monitor is the only one that can be powered off the brain with no additional batteries to worry about. Plus, the touch screen is VERY intuitive. When I handled it the first time, I was able to go into the menu and find an option that I didn't know the name or its location the first time without fiddling around. It is VERY nice. Any other monitor of equal resolution is going to be in the same range price wise.

For the rest of your money, consider accessories from WoodenCamera.com or Viewfactor.net as well as mounting accessories from RED. I love that you can mount 15mm lightweight right in the front of the camera, but you're going to need someone's add-on plate for that. If you've already got lenses, think about making some investments in your post pipeline. Maybe a new Macbook Pro, maybe a Red Rocket card, maybe Premiere CS5.5. Your ability to handle those beautiful R3D's can make your experience with RED fun or.... not so much.

Just my 2 cents, anyway.

As long as we are on the topic of REDvolts, does anyone know how long it takes to charge one?

I can't wait to feel that!

It's all coming together (like a Beatles song)

SCARLET-X W/ AL CANON MOUNT / SIDE SSD - $9,750.00
DSMC SIDE HANDLE - $950.00
REDVOLT (4pk) - $750.00
RED STATION REDMAG 1.8" - $250.00
REDMAG 64GB (4pk) - $3250
DSMC TRAVEL CHARGER (2)- $250.00
RED TOUCH 5.0" LCD - $1,600.00

= $16,800

I really think that the RED TOUCH 5.0" LCD is the way to go for monitoring. Easy menu access, and touch focus - won't use that all the time, but awesome to have.

I agree, touch focus is going to be killer

Don't forget the top handle and some sort of shoulder mount and cage solution. The Scarlet tactical cage looks like a good option. The top handle is a must. I'll definitely get that. And, of course, the Red Armor!

Haha, this. And this:

Are the reason I have to laugh at the 'Scarlet for 10k!', 'Scarlet for 14k!' cries for joy.

Still a lot of camera for the money though!

Thanks for compiling this, Chris. Gives me a better idea. Of course there's lenses, too.

I think 64 GB SSDs are too small, if you shoot HDR, you'll get 20 minutes on a card...

Cheers,
Damien
