  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-X Vs. Red One MX

Until something beyond 4k becomes the standard for output the Red One MX wil continue to be an incredibly versatile, valuable piece of equipment for a great many people. I cannot see why it would drop too much further beyond the price points being discussed in this thread until the competition starts producing similarly powerful cameras at lower price points. It will happen one day, but after last night's Canon announcement I cannot see it happening very soon.

you realize that even with some of the people agreeing on a 15k-ish bottom (and some MX packages already showing up for 17 and 18k) that means the MX body itself has already depreciated to an abysmal 9k - 10k because alot of these packages have 5-10k worth of gear on them and they're selling for 18k etc for an MX package completely decked out with thousands of dollars worth of stuff. That means if Red MX PACKAGES bottom out at 15k that means the MX body itself is bottoming out at sub 10k which is crazy...

If that's the case, then very shortly you will see folks start to buy the R1 kits realizing they are an exceptional value. How crazy is that? Only time will tell what the ultimate value of the R1 winds up being, but it still might be better to hold onto it versus a quick sale. I haven't made up my mind, that's for sure.

You know what would be cool, if Red waited until all their orders are filled for Epics, Scarlets etc (obviously 1st or 2nd quarter of next year) and then made an announcement that they will now open up the equivalent of stage 2 (or whichever stage that was) to ALL R1 owners that they can now send in their R1's and get credit to a certain amount towards an Epic or Dragon or whatever. Now that would be really amazing :)

You're smoking the evil weed...

lmao....why what's so outlandish about that? I didn't say they have to give us 20k credit or anything. How bout 10-12k credit on a R1 MX body put towards a new Epic X? ...........No? ...........anyone?

it's called a trade in. If car dealerships can do it, why can't the premier digital cinema company of the world?

Nice flattery.

The r1's value, a good MX package with EVF lightly used seems to be @$20k. A thrashed non-MX (and there are plenty of those about) say half that. That's still a great camera for your @$100k feature or longform doco, or a B cam for any RED shoot for probably another 3 years. If you shoot a minimum of $50k of work per year in those years, its astounding value.

..., I would expect that soon we will see a RED ONE upgrade path that will change all of that. There was a hint of that when Jim posted that we will be very happy that we kept our RED ONEs when executing EPIC Stage 2.

Do you know which thread that quote from Jim is in?

I have done a search both on here and with Google and can't find it.
