#1. Trade in your Scarlet to Full Epic-X (including new black body) - $9500. After that.. you can upgrade your Epic-X to Full Epic Dragon through the normal Epic-X to Dragon process.

Pre-orders begin this Thursday. Upgrades begin July.

Jarred stated in the quote above that we can trade our Scarlets to a full Epic-X, with emphasis on new body. Not clear if this implies that the sensor and boards will be from the Epic's that are being upgraded to Dragon or brand new ones.

That would explain why we can't trade in instantly and have to wait till July.

I don't want to start any rumors about it, I was just wondering if anyone has any information about the issue, as I have hard time finding anything about it on the form here.

Thanx for any feedback on it guys.

Would it matter if they re-use parts from other EPICs and maybe marry it to the sensor from your old Scarlet? I don't think RED lowers their quality-standards for this trade-in-offer in any way just to get away cheaper or with higher profits. But if they're doing the whole process in a more economical or green way, why not welcome that?

Don't forget you get the full warranty with those EPICs.

BTW, i think they're giving out new brains, and start selling the "old" stuff as battle-tested later...

This was answered before by both Brent and jarred. You send in your scarlet, they inspect it, then send you a new epic brain. The only thing you will keep from your scarlet is SSD module and lens mount. The only question that still needs to be answered is when do they start the upgrade as they stated this would start first and soon.

I am not complaining I am fine with either. And yes it matters a lot.
I can order an Epic-X right now and have it in a week. This implies there is stock of it.
If I go with a trade in I am speculating on getting an Epic-X around August considering the amount of people before me.

If the sensor and boards are coming from upgraded Epic's they could be over two years old, even if they are fully functional and have warranty, they would be more likely to fail than a new one.

Again, I am not complaining, and I don't want to speculate. I am just looking for information on it.

My understanding is that the Scarlet to Epic trade-up provides you a brand new Epic. I don't have any more insight than anyone else here but, as I followed this whole topic closely, that did seem to be what would happen.

Based on what I have read about why some brains have certain problems, and others don't, I suspect that as RED has received certain complaints, they have, very quietly, made minor hardware tweaks to the boards along the way.
I would want a brain with the latest, greatest boards in it, as a brain with new boards would be less likely to have hardware related problems.

I'm getting more and more on the Epic MX wagon (once I have the money). Thinking about it, what I want most about the Dragon is improved lowlight capacity. Sure the extra stops of Dynamic Range is great, but I'm really satisfied with what I've got. Haven't had any use for more, which is why I've never had to use the HDRx. On the other hand the Epic gives me the same maximum resolution and at double the framerate from a sensor that isn't cropped. Even if Scarlet Dragon gets a usable pair of framerates for shooting timelapse in 6K I don't feel like missing out on anything. First of all getting a Epic would indeed be - Epic(!?). But the highspeed framerates is something I've been wanting since 2008. I can live without it, but it makes the camera more complete as it is a Red. Also as it is still questionable whether the new Scarlet will be able to upgrade, I feel like the Epic upgrade is more futureproof.

that is how it was announced.....which is why you have to send your scarlet in for it to be checked out to see if it is in working condition...you will also be asked to send in the side ssd and mount (which is what i was told).....i am sure that is so they can make sure the new epic brain works with the existing hardware.....
