  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-X technical Q&A

Unless they only published the higher frame rates numbers.
I too imagine that with much compression it could achieve a bit more frames per second. Anyway, 4K at 25p is already f**ing great to me !

QUESTION I POSTED IN THE FEEDBACK THREAD UNANSWERED :

Can we have names engraved on the SCarlet when we order it ?

4K, 3K, 2K and 1K is cropped sensor.

Jim

Are there (or will there be) any specific Ana modes in the Scarlet (as with the Epic?) - 4K/3K Ana would be great and my Lomos are begging for RAW!

... and great job Jim... and everyone at Red... it was the craziest announcement yet! I was glued to my laptop for 5 hours over in the UK - I'm tired out, so you and the team must be working on reserves (of reserves!).

About cropping in the sensor... It means you'll have a smaller field of view (shooting 24P 4K with Scarlet) than someone shooting 24P 5K with Epic, right ? Now, I'm not sure about the sensor size difference beetween the DMSCs and the Red-One-MX? Can someone tell us if 24P 4K on scarlet gives you a wiider or smaller (or same) FOV than shooting with the RED-1MX?

Thanks for the answers everyone, one more question: do we know specifically where the Scarlet is hardware limited? IE should we expect anything else to be unlocked via firmware down the line? The ASICs etc are cheaper etc so they obviously are data rate limited in a way that the EPIC isn't, and the sensor wasn't up to EPIC standards, so obviously nowhere near 120 at higher frame sizes will be possible from either a sensor or ASIC standpoint — that's why you buy the Epic, but a full S35 sensor 5k @ 24, or even hdrx at the current sizes but higher frame rates, with a more-lossy encoding ratio would keep the data rate lower, as long as the sensor can spit out at that much data, and the ASIC can take it — is this something we might be able to expect in 6 months or so, or should we just assume RED's giving us all the bang they can muster out of these systems from the start?

Some people have been making casual references to firmware updates down the road, but I haven't seen or read anything other than comments from random people — do we know when/where this was said? These aren't make or break questions for me, I'm in, but it will help me plan lenses etc, based on knowing that I'll just need to get used to shooting 4k windowed. Thanks again all,

Is the Scarlet brain the same size dimensions as the Epic?

Thanks!

Hello everybody,

Some important questions:

What bitrate does Scarlet have? I see in the tech specs web "16-bit RAW Processing : Compression choices of 18:1 to 3:1" How much is it in Mb/s?

Can Scarlet generate QT Proxys?

What kind of resolution and bitrate can I record by HD-SDI out?

Regards

4k HD on R1, Epic, and Scarlet-X are all the same FOV and film back size.

I have one question ,Scarlet is switchable with 50mhz and 60mhz?any one have any idea?pls

Is Scarlet-X upgradable to the new Dragon chip in 2012?

Is Scarlet-X upgradable to the new Dragon chip in 2012?

Multiple RED employees have confirmed this, though they have also stated that it will cost more than upgrading Epic (since there are other differences in the circuit boards that need to be upgraded on Scarlet, which are currently fine on Epic). No price estimates have been given aside from this.

Another question:

Are aspect ratio options on Scarlet stay the same as on Epic?

What aspect ratios are available at what resolution?

Sensor

I've been seeing references to the scarlet sensor saying that it may be Epic sensors that didn't make the grade qualification for the epic readout rates, or some other parameter.
Is this the case?
If so, will the sensor exhibit any image quality differences when shot at scarlet spec?

The acid test would be: shoot SBS 3d with the left eye Scarlet and the right eye Epic !

I just asked in the announcement thread (probably not a good idea as this seems like a more applicable place to ask), but has the audio functionality of Scarlet-X been discussed covered? What does it have, is it enabled at launch, etc.?

Its not the sensor, but rather the control boards and ASICs that failed EPIC Quality Assurance.

Multiple Red employees have posted saying that you can use Scarlet and Epic in an S3D rig, provided of course you slow the Epic down to match the Scarlet.

Its the same as Epic.

Scarlet and Epic share a lot of the same components ... and you can expect that features enabled on Epic will also be enabled on Scarlet.
