Scarlet-X Rental Rate

Hey guys, do I have a better chance to rent my camera with cine lenses/lens (red pro 17-50) included? I'm sure the more power and media the better, right?
How do I go about finding, contacting prospective renters?

It may not be LA or NY around there, but that could also prove to beneficial to you in terms of rates to charge as your market will have far less competition rental wise I would imagine, so fewer options for renters means keeping prices more realistic. In LA and NY the market can get so saturated, that you have guys renting out gear for fractions of the going rates just so they get work, bring rental rates down across the board, this happened with the Red One which now rents for surprisingly affordable rates if you know where to look.

My 2 cents at least...

How are you planning on using AB batteries? I've got a couple of AB mount batts that I use for LED fixtures that I would love to be able to use as a secondary power source for the red. I've seen their V-mount plate, is there an AB plate thats similar?

finally I found a link..

I actually manage this rental house that you've provided a link from. The price here is for a bare bones kit. Custom packages with more gear (including cards and batts), will obviously cost more. The final prices will of course change based on the market (since the camera isn't even out yet.)

This price is based on a few factors: 1- We are a smaller house and we have to be price competitive, 2- this has to compete with our F3 pricing (a shooting kit costs about the same to purchase as an F3 shooting kit), 3- the market will be over-saturated with Scarlets, and these higher prices that everyone is throwing out will definitely come down pretty quickly. We've already gotten more calls from people who are looking to sub-rent their Scarlet packages to us than people who are looking to rent them out. Think about that one for a second. That is unheard of, at least for me.

Also, Red Ones are out there in abundance. They have a little more power, but the only thing making the Scarlet more appealing to rent is the smaller size and price. All these R1's are not going to just disappear. They will be dirt cheap to buy and rent.

I have been trying to decide if I should buy a Scarlet or just rent based on need and I think the other factor here is the newer, mail based rental business. Doing mail order rental of pro level cinema cameras before was not realistic; the size and weight of even a basic camera package made it pretty expensive. Even now you probably are not going to rent an Alexa by mail. But, Epic and now Scarlet are not much larger than a medium format camera package. With the complete conversion to SSDs for longer shoots, there are few moving parts. So you have an industrial grade camera, that is light and can be shipped via UPS/FedEx with minimal danger of damage. Epic's are already available for rent this way:

The pricing in this link is a bit high compared to local LA rentals. But, for other DSLR equipment Canon 5DMII, lenses etc the prices are very good on this and other mail based rental houses. The lower cost Scarlet's will be priced more like pro-sumer video cameras and DSLRs; esp as the become more and more plentiful.

Even if without the core camera rental's mail order rental houses are already driving down the rental prices of lenses and accessories. Since (SSDs and a few other specialized components aside) REDs can take many of these lenses and accessories, this will also eat into the pricing of accessory rentals charged by locally based rental houses.

For a comparison take a look at 5DMII rentals:

http://divisioncamera.com/product.tpl?id=1470214 - LA local rental house that caters to indies

A 4 week rental (including 2 batteries) has more than a $1,000 differential. Now I did not include flash cards. The LA based camera rental has a few; but they are 8 gig cards which you could buy for less then renting for 1 month. Yes, this does not include shipping etc. But, with a nearly %150 price difference shipping is a pretty small cost to pay.

For a Cinema Camera comparison take a look at F3 rentals:

http://www.borrowlenses.com/product/camcorder_vid/Sony_F3L - mail order house

A three day rental by mail is almost the same price as a single day. A week by mail under twice the three day rate (rental houses usually charge 3-4 days the daily rate for a week so the local house would be $1800 or up).

Essentially this applies the Netflix model to Equipment Rental (you get a return UPS mailer with the equipment rental). I think we can agree local video stores did not do too well against Netflix. I don't see that as there get to be a lot of Scarlet's out there (in addition a good bit of RED Ones original and MX as a previous poster stated) how there won't be a lot of downward price pressure on Scarlet rentals.
