  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet X NOW... or wait for dragon sensor?!

My film camera has 14+ stops of dynamic range and about 6k worth of resolution and it was made in the early 1980s. If Dragon can deliver that you'll have something better than the very best of the last 2 decades. Way cooler stuff will of course come out (20+ stops of dynamic range, wider color gamut, Lightfield etc...) but I would be happy with a film replacement and Dragon is set to do that.

Sensor upgrade with increased sensitivity, color gamut and dynamic range. > 1 stop probably of dynamic range. Rumors peg it at 2+ putting Dragon at 15.5+ stops.

There's an outside chance it'll be larger and higher resolution. But that's speculation based on its historical "Monstro" roots which was supposed to be the sensor which replaced Mysterium-X (the current sensor) but would only come in FF35 or larger sizes.

I think it almost certainly has to have increased resolution (and so likely to be larger sensor size as well), given Jim's mention that the Scarlet will need extra board replacements (indicating some data processing/throughput constraint due to the slower boards in the Scarlet compared to Epic).

Extended Dynamics = more data, too...

the pixeldensity on the Monstro, was supposed to be lower than on MX. More resolution was due to larger sensors...

Buy it. Use it. Move on.
How frustrated will you be if you decide to hold off and the new sensor has delay after delay and you are just waiting and waiting?

There is absolutely no good reason to get a camera - any camera, an iPhone, a 7D, whatever and start making images because there will come something better later.
You won't get one single ounce better at photography without actually taking images.

If you wait for dragon the total cost (like buying an MX red today) will probably be higher than buying today and upgrading later. Just the scarlet + accessory package goes up by almost $4,000 on Jan 1. That's a huge discount on Dragon and you get to use the cam for 6 months. It makes no sense to wait in my opinion.

I knew the brain was going up in price, but can anyone link to where it is posted that the $14,015 Canon mount package is going up $4,000? If this is absolutely correct I probably won't wait as I had planned. Thanks in advance.

Don't wait for a product that doesn't have a confirmed release date. Especially something by RED - read the disclaimer in Jim's signature. The only possible reason to wait would be if you are currently committed to a project that will significantly benefit from superior low-light, dynamic range, etc. and you are opposed to using the camera for anything else in the interim.

Hey Gavin,

Just curious, where did you get your figure for the $4K price increase? From my understanding the base package at $9750 including the SSD side module was only stepping up after Jan 1st to being just the brain and mount? No SSD module @ $1.5K?

What's your thoughts here?

And no Canon Mount or AC adapter bundled either as the current package has but that is still not quite $4000 saving, more like $3200ish total as we do not know the price of the Aluminum mount. Overall seems to me like RED is all about keep customers happy with good affordable upgrade paths.

I'm actually referring to the $14k package. Which will include:

The AL Mount $500
The SSD side module $1500
AC Power: $150

Side Handle price increase: $800
Touch screen increase: $350
- $50 price decrease
-----------------------
$3250 or about 25% off.

So I guess it's actually closer to $3k but it's still a big discount. Even if Dragon was 50% of scarlet's brain ($5k) that would be 60% the price of the dragon upgrade and you get to use your camera for 6 months until then. If you rent out your package for $400 a day you would only need 1 day of rental per month over the next 6 months to pay off the rest of the upgrade cost... and you would have it for the other 175 days. Even if the dragon upgrade was the same price as a new Scarlet then you would get 33% off the Dragon upgrade down the line and there is nothing to say that buying a dragon scarlet (if they even offer one) won't cost more than upgradeing an existing scarlet.

If you bought a RED One originally you would have paid $17.5k + $5.75k = $23.25k current RED One MX price? $25k. With RED the name of the game is to get in early.

I believe it is $7k-$8k just to replace a damaged sensor in an EPIC. Someone had theirs damaged by a laser and posted about it a while ago. I can't find the actual thread right now.

That would imply then that a scarlet only costs $1k outside of the sensor price? If that's the case give us another $1k worth of electronics and double the capability haha. Better investment than a Ti Canon mount.

Gavin,

I think there are other things to consider.

Are you forgetting that the labor to complete the repair also costs money? Maybe the labor in this case costs more than the part? Maybe the laser cooked additional parts, or sensor replacement just means replacing the single largest board in the camera entirely.
