On March 27th a group of firmware re- developers (hackers) posted boot-log packets on the popular camera hacking consortium Magic Lantern's site. The firmware supposedly copied from the famed Red Epic-M camera was used to re-boot the Scarlet-x, removing all previous limitations while adding new features like noise reduction, higher frame rates, 1 stop more dynamic range and in-camera scaled recording of Apple Pro-res 422HQ codec at 2k. They were extremely excited about the Pro-res recording a feature Red has refused to enable in its cameras. The hackers attribute all their successes to the ingenuity of Red's engineers, claiming Red was only sloppy in securing the camera firmware builds which are easy to download from the support section of their site. The hackers claim the most time spent was finding a Scarlet owner willing to experiment with their camera. The Hack has now been downloaded and working successfully for 92 alpha testers. Phillip Bloom a vocal critic of Red, posted on his popular blog "this hack makes the Scarlet the best indie camera on the market, I just placed an order for 3". Cinematographer Hewlett Van Burensen did a low light test which confirmed the new low light and noise reduction capabilities which make the camera useable at ISO 6400.

No word has been heard from camp Red, which is rather unusual as this hack threatens future Epic-x sales.

Utterly believable until the line about me. I only ordered two!

BTW I actually adore RED cameras and have never always raved about them. Best camera I have eve used. Not an April Fool. Serious

P.S. check out blackmagicuser. Magic Lantern has hacked the camera to give it the ability to format and delete clips in camera. #GameChanger #T3iBeater

P.P.S that last bit may not be true ;)

AHAHA Crazy REDUSER :thumbsup::lol:

1 APRILLLLLL :devil:

Hi Philip, is this what it takes to draw you out?

It's nice to know that you still come round this way.

I was intrigued so it was worth being fooled ;)

PB you at NAB this year?

the rashtag #T3iBeater made my day... lol

I was reading and thinking if this would be possible for the R1MX too but then I remember the day today... lol

Well... Let's get back to shooting day. Have a nice week everyone!

Whats funny is that I actually know/have worked with a guy that is running much higher frame rates on his Scarlet than I am on mine. We were shooting 5k24 6:1 on a music video not too long ago. He is very protective of the source...

HAHAHA, Philip!! I am not much of a BMCC fan, but I do love reading your reviews man!!! Keep them going, good job!! I am a former 5D MARK II & 7D Owner and finally stepped up to 2 RED 1 MX cams....Never will I want to use anything else, Its the best ALL-AROUND camera for me. I do admit I may use a 5d or go-pro for crazy action mounts stuff!! ;)

I don't know if I just wasn't expecting it from REDusers, but oh man this got me. I've made it to mid April 2nd here in Aus without falling for one yet.

But this shattered me. Well done

Perhaps he's a beta tester? Very interesting.
