Just wanted to ask some of your opinions about the upgrade options available. I would love to have higher frame rates and don't necessarily need 6k for my projects BUT The option for the new sensor sounds great and its the same price as upgrading to an epic Do you think the Scarlet Dragon will resemble as big of differences as the Scarlet to epic is nowFor how long do you imagine them offering the upgrade / trade in offer.

Here's my take as a current Scarlet owner: I think Epic Dragon will be THE standard for a while to come, maybe 2 years or more. Given that, I aspire to get to that level before it's time to look at another jump to Super Dragon (or whatever). So, my plan is to trade my Scarlet up to Epic early next year, then cross my fingers that the Epic to Dragon upgrade is available until still later in the year and see if I can make that transition at that time. I just feel that upgrading to Scarlet Dragon might give some instant gratification but, being the end of the line (as far as we know), would end up making me lust for Epic Dragon.

When we get details and images from Scarlet Dragon, maybe I will change my mind. Everything changes with RED.

Thanks Terry. That sounds like the route i'll most likely take. Being a Scarlet owner i've always been jealous of the Epic on shoots. Ive just been trying to weigh out the pros and cons for the choice where my budget is a concern down the road.

Hey Reagan,

I was in the same position as you for a while. I made a conclusion that Epic-X is the way to go, and I'm so happy I made the choice. The factors that swayed me are: It's available now, improvement of image quality over Scarlet with 5k (more res, greater FOV), and 96fps at mas res/no crop, and you even get a brand new camera. Plus you can go Dragon later too. Who knows when Scarlet Dragon will be ready, and by the time you get it, you may have even been able to upgrade to epic and pay it off already.

But either way, any choice you make is a win for you.

I'm a little bit in the same situation with my Scarlet. I personally am going to go with the a Epic. The overcrank and 5k field of view are the biggest things I'll need. I don't have a need for 6k yet, but the dynamic range and new ISO would be a huge welcome. As a DP though, I have always been very satisfied with the MX's dynamic range and ISO. Plus if you're good enough at your job as a DP and lighting scenes, you won't need that extra dynamic range or ISO. But if you don't have a full grip truck for a shoot, the Dragon can become very handy. I've worked with the Dragon and it excels in high dynamic range scenes and low lit scenes, but it all comes down to what you're needs are as a DP.
