Scarlet-X Canon and the 4K future

Erwin,

Thanks for posting the article. I enjoyed how writing included a lot of other cameras and tries to be unbiased, although I did feel it leaned in RED's favor. :)

I have to admit, watching a 4k projection at RED Studios Hollywood and watching my 1080p, there is just no comparison. Totally blew my mind. To have 4k projected at home would be awesome.

I just wrote the following at another tread:

The last InterBEE 2011 Tokyo told us that the "future proof" is 8K and already made 4K obsolete.

That's one of reasons in general I agree with an American artists Jenny Holzer who told use years ago that THE FUTURE IS STUPID.

Actually the future is more or less something like a sort of zig-zag movement.

What does it mean to us, filmmakers and cinematographers?

It means that you can mix and combine all in one movie if you would need it HD, 2K, 4K, even 8K.

That's the main reason I just ordered both cameras: Scarlet-X and Canon C300.

Lacking in information... more of a quick piece. Wondering what the pixel size is on Mysterium X, compared to the other S35 sensors there. And scarlet-X doesn't do HDRx at more than 12fps, so that's not very helpful.

Hopefully they'll work that magic and allow for HDRX at 24fps on 4K...given we all lived without HDRX before so I'd love to see peoples uses for HDRX, maybe some creative ones from the EPIC crowd that wasn't originally the intended use perhaps?

On the note of the future...lets put it this way. Every camera manufacturer will try and hold out on 1080p for as long as possible. They will progress when TV and Cinemas push for 4K, when their local facilities have the ability to push out 4K at the same speed, with no issue, as 1080p (yes its possible now but I assume that the workflow is still having problems getting through to those clinging onto past habits). More so, 4K will be eventually the same as 1080p at some point. There will never be an end point, otherwise they will never be able to sell you...another TV for example. The world forever wants to sell the next thing to you and so they will tell you at that period in time that 'X' is good enough. Move forward and 'X' becomes obsolete. I remember DVDs being 'good enough' now people love Blu-Rays... it's weird but its how it works...
4K will become 8K...

What I'd love to see from RED is that unlike what Canon seems to be doing with backtracking on MP is that RED increases everything, ISO performance and MP etc. this would put them miles ahead of the competition but the looks of how Canon is apparently rumored to be dropping the 5DM3 down to 18mp and working on its performance. All great but helps RED catch up to those that think 'Megapixels' really do matter. Which no argument that they do but this is once again a sign of the idea of progression and there is no such thing as a future point where everyone is satisfied.

I believe pixel size on MX is 5.4 microns. And, at 3k, Scarlet will do up to 25 fps with HDRx. RED has also said they are trying to develop a "special" HDRx mode which will allow 24 fps at 4K on Scarlet.
