Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone who got his Scarlet tried nikon G lenses on it (with an optitek mount or adapter) ?

It would be nice to have a few pics and frame grabs if possible.

I have a set of nikon G lenses and three canons'. I'm waiting to test myself to decide to go canon or stay nikon, but I'd like to hear your experience.

Let the beautiful pictures come ! :001_tt1:

Damn, as soon as I've seen the thread's name I rushed inside expecting to see that someone has finally put that Nikon G lenses I've heard so much about on a Scarlet.

Well...+1 then I guess :001_smile:

Sorry mate ! :001_smile:

I'm just asking, not offering !

I'm interested on hear some opinnions on what would be the best choice btween Nikon G series vs Zeiss ZE/ZF.

Hey Rodrigo,

I have both G & Zeiss Distagon ZF lenses...the Zeiss is noticeably sharper.

Which G lenses?

Thr use of this term to describe the high end Nikon primes is incredibly imprecise. I find it hard to believe based on what I've seen that the cream of the crop Nikon primes (24/1.4, 35/1.4, 85/1.4 AF-S G models) would be noticeably less sharp... Or less sharp at all... Than the ZF lenses.

I use G glass and will be testing it with adapters as soon as my Scarlet shows up. I've been using Nikon G on 7D's and 5D's for a few years now. I love Nikon glass as it has a certain crispness that I feel often lacks in the Canon glass. That doesn't mean Canon makes inferior glass just very different looks in my opinion. I look forward to posting some material unless someone beats me to it..

Clarification...
In support of Harrison's comment in regards to G vs ZF...it would only be fair to compare apples to apples. Granted the shot comparison we tested is based on a Lexus studio stills shoot for print/editorial...which may differ from the same lens usage for video Shoots.

Test specs is as follows: 85 f1.4f vs 85 f1.4ZF on a D3X, full rez, post workflow included print prep magnified at 500x. Since sharpness is essentially edge detection, at this magnification, there's a clear distinction of detailed edge detection favoring the Zeiss glass.

Again, for Scarlet usage, both the G or ZF glass will most likely mirror each other in terms of detail. Please confirm, but I believe the resolution of the Scarlet at 4k is equivalent to 12-14MP...at this resolution, our naked eye won't tell the diff.

In regards to Optitek...I spoke with Jacek last week. As you know, this is a mount replacement, therefore it's not an adapter. There's NO additional layer of glass. My concern is the electronic iris on my G lenses. Also, the Optitek will not allow any controls via the LCD. My workaround is to use my older D-type lens with the manual aperture...until the Nikon mount becomes available.

Yeah, the nikon 1.4 trinity (except 50mm) are three of the sharpest still lenses I've ever seen.
I'm also working with nikon G on a 7D with the mechanically controlled aperture adapter. And I think it's so fine in video mode.
This is just my preference... and that's why i was wondering if anybody has already shot with G and Scarlet or Epic.
Before investing in two pl lenses with the mount, I wanna know if my G lenses will rock or not ! ;)

Your g lenses will rock. Get the Optitek Nikon mount and you will have a pl style locking mount as well and geared iris control of any Nikon - g or regular

It's a no brainer

Many thanks Michael !
I know you've been shooting with nikon lenses for a while... So your opinion counts a lot to me. :-D

Marq, the OptiTek mount will control the iris on your G lenses. All of Nikon's G glass has mechanical iris actuators that the ProLock mount uses to control iris. The only Nikon lens I'm aware of that it will not control is the new fully-electronic t/s lens.

I'm using the novoflex's and kippon ... but I'ml not shure that's a good idea to use them with de al canon mount... wouldn't there be more distance tween back optics and sensor?

@Franck - any lens adaptor to Canon will work with the epic Canon mount.

I.e. Anything with an EF mount on it will theoretically be the correct distance - so a dumb nikon mount to eos or any other adaptor with correct flange will be fine (assuming the adaptor achieves infinity etc)

As for witness marks for iris -none will actually "be correct" because all G lenses have different iris throws as demonstrated recently by Tom from Allstar - you could measure the t stop per lens and mark the lens with reference though.

Hey David,
Thank you for clarifying. We were about to pull the trigger on Jacek's ProLock, but have some time, since we're pretty far down the Scarlet list.
In regards to your comment about adjusting the Iris, are you referring to the controls on the ring/mount itself...not through the LCD right?

From my chat with Jacek, it sounded like the ProLock is only responsible to function from the mount to the lens. It WILL NOT have any functionality from the mount to the camera...this is to maintain the warranty of the Brain, which was RED approved.

Please let us know otherwise.

Because of this issue, we were going to use our Fotodiox on the EF mount: http://www.amazon.com/Fotodiox-Pro-...3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1325360323&sr=1-3

Until the Nikon mount becomes accessible of course.

Correct. The Optitek doesn't not communicate with the camera. Also, who nows when the RED Nikon mount will be released. They mentioned that it has been more difficult than they thought and will also be more expensive than the Canon version. So, the Optitek is the best option at the moment. I have one and it's really well built.

Sounds good...thanks Bob. It does sound like a good option. Any chance you can upload sample footage or point me to an existing thread? 2k and/or 4k. Ungraded frame grabs would be fine also.
