Hi everyone I'm brand new to this forum and this is actually my first post. But I am a cinematographer and editor. Ive been following RED since the RED One. Im looking to purchase a Scarlet X or an Epic X. Now I know the Epic is better than the Scarlet in many ways. Im familiar with the specs. But my question is, is the Scarlet at 24fps at 4K the same exact image as the Epic x at 24fps at 4K? I know the image quality also depends on the compression setting as well. But if both cameras at 4k have the same compression,exposure,etc... will both images be identical? Same question for 48fps at 3K? I just want to make the best choice for me at the moment. Should I buy the Scarlet X now because I have the funds and save a little more and upgrade to Epic X later or Just Save a little more now and just buy the Epic X? Can you guys assist.

word is, that the scarlet is a bit "softer" or lower-rez-looking on 2K - als of 4K I don't have any info tho, but 4K is enough resolution for producing sharp and clean 2K and FullHD images anyways (you gain back some sharpness by the downscaling-process). It's not only the sensor/camera tho - a good lens is also needed! I'd base my desision not on the resolution only (4K vs. 5K) but rather on the framerate-choices for slomo and on the rest of the feature-set -> if you want to do slomo-work not far away from this point of time I'm sure the EPIC suits you better, if you "only" want to do realtime (e.g. interviews, regular TV content) there's no need for that at all...

Hi Peter, yes I do a lot of music videos and slo mo is a necessity. I have searched the web, forums etc... and I have seen a lot of brilliant videos with the scarlet even with slomo shots, but like you said it depends on the lens as well. Of course the Epic x is the best choice over all. just want to make the best decisions for my company right now.

Well, I've heard of people successfully using an Epic and a Scarlet on one 3d rig, so they must match pretty well. At the same compression they are supposed to be identical. But slomo=epic for sure.
