Hi Folks

I am hoping there might be people here who can shed some light on the Scarlet-X and RED PRO 300mm T2.9 PRIME LENS combination with respect to vignetting, image sharpness and whether I will need lens support (and which RED items would be suitable). Also how this lens might resolve on the Scarlets spanking 5120 (h) x 2700 (v) sensor.

I mostly work with urban landscapes and need the longer focal length. I was considering the Canon 300mm 2.8 (I or II) although budget is a factor. A battle tested 300 is relatively cost effective, and while it is quite heavy, the bonus seems to be that the lens is wonderfully constructed, built like a tank and are superb optically. Can anyone vouch for this?

The RED 300mm appears to be nicely sharp with a pleasing bokeh (based on the limited tests viewable online), and the T2.9 combined with the Scarlet is fast enough for my purposes. I have also been considering how the crop factors will affect the 300mm at 5K, 4K, 3K and 2K and this should provide some extra reach when bumping down to 3K and 2K (even 1K).

Anything anyone can add would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Christopher,

Mark Toia recently posted some great stuff that he shot with the 300 and the Epic. I love the way mine looks at 4K on my Red One.

Duclos lenses sells a support for the 300 that I've been very happy with. Jim Jannard has said that he uses the 300 with no support on the titanium PL mount on the Epic. But then, if he breaks the camera or the lens he can probably afford a new one!

just search for discussions on here about the RPP 300mm & epic, It will be exactly the same on scarlet. Ti PL mount can hold it, see mark toia's video and post about it

I have a battle tested RPP 300mm and theres no way on earth that thing has been used, they are that nice.

Thanks for this information, this more or less locks in my decision. I had read that you could get away with this lens and no support. Good to hear Jim thinks so too. I think I will go for more PL lenses for the longer run, and this beauty will start off my set. I will be running my Leica M 35f1.4 Asph as my wider lens.
