Got my Scarlet in on last Wednesday night (SO # 1008) with serial #954. Just like many others I have waited 3+ years for this. His name is Raphael...

I am still waiting on a side handle (ordered on Nov. 3). The matte box is a cheap Formatt FM-600 Matte Box (about $300) , but is very light. The lens I have on it is a Zeiss 35mm f2.0 prime.

I asked this question in another thread, but was wondering if it was normal to be seeing so much noise in my images (standard lit room, f2.0 ISO 800)? When I crush the blacks a Good Bit it goes away, I am just wondering if it is something I am doing. I see posts about shooting with available lights from cars at night and people say they are very happy with the results (not just watching compressed web stuff). I wasn't expecting this much noise honestly, but again I'm guessing it is something I am doing/not doing. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Fist off congratulations, I know this has nothing to do with your question but if you can tell me how long you had to wait once you put down a deposit, I just put my deposit couple of days ago and just trying to figure it out how long I have to wait before I get my very own?

Thank you

Thanks! I ordered Nov. 3rd roughly 2.5 hrs after it was announced with SO #1008. I put a deposit down that night.

learn to use those exposure and noise level tools. Don't go by what you see on the screen.

Thanks Bob. I was using the exposure and noise tools, with a small amount in noise according to the tools. With your experience should it read no noise at at all according to the tools? ( I just figured the blacks would be in noise, without the majority of the image) It may just be something I have to get used to. it just seems others are raving about low noise, so it has to be me!

Have you done a black-shade calibration?

Have you done a black-shade calibration?

I have. I do one at the start of everyday. Should it be more often? Do I need to do a black-shade calibration every time settings change? Should I do a default black shading, or Current FPS/Exposure black shading?

Congrats, DJ!

Can you post one of the problematic r3d's? That would help to see what is going on with your picture. Not having seen it though, what are you using as reference- redgamma2 or redlog film? A fellow Reduser and experienced DP said that by using redlogfilm and exposing for it through the lcd he ended up 3 stops underexposed, so how about trying shooting iso 800 2.0 with redgamma2 and expose looking at it?

Standard room light... Are we talking incandescent here? That could have a big impact on noise especially in the blue channel, especially if exposing for 800

Congratulations DJ, nice pictures (and Mattebox):thumbup1:

Use the exposure view to see where the noise is and if there is deep purple in the image, then It's going to be noisy. There is a good thread on exposing for the scarlet that is worth a read. The hard thing is that I think everyone thinks that at 800iso the camera is noiseless even if dark regions, but it's not. I personally rate and expose for 320, but that's just me. Also, a lot of cameras which don't shoot raw have built in noise reduction as the image is being processed. Since you are getting raw on the Red it's not doing as much of that. Buy neat video, a noise reduction software, and give it a shot. It is pretty amazing actually. I find that just shooting and testing a lot both in production and post will give you a good "gut" on what is going to be useable and unusable as you shoot. Use your exposure view and stay out of purple and red and you will be good to go.

This is the best Scarlet footage I seen so for. Love the custome!

I love it when the numbers get high! I can't wait until we hit #1000.

Nice. What LCD cable is it? I don't find anything longer than the original 12" with right angle to right angle.

Thank you guys for your time! I will post the r3d's later tonight. I was using RedGamma2

It was incandescent light for majority of the clips, however I did have other clips with sunlight coming in from a large window and got similar noise results.

That is a great point. Thanks Randal! That makes sense as far as recording RAW and not having noise reduction...I have heard great things about Neat Video Plugin. So when you shoot you make sure to completely stay out of any purple? Thanks everyone for the help!
